Merry Christmas!

Thank you to all who open & read this little newsletter.  FACT connects with supporters in several ways: via our member publication, Paw Printz; through periodic postal mailings; via our Facebook page, and through direct email.  I’m sorry if you’ve received this letter by mail, also, or if you’ve already donated.  We don’t currently have the capacity to sort recipients in detail, and for many people, all we have is your email address.

As the Ferret Association enters our 25th year, we continue to aid individual ferrets in the Northeast.  Our work also helps other groups care for ferrets across the country and beyond.

You make these additional initiatives to help all ferrets possible. We’ve listed below program updates for the past year.  80% of your gift directly helps ferrets.  The Ferret Association is committed to financial openness—so much that we’ve earned a Gold Seal from Guidestar™, respected for providing the public with nonprofit financial data.  Our promise is to always use your contributions wisely and effectively.

A gift to the Ferret Association helps ferrets.  Please consider donating today.

We are grateful for every donation and acknowledge all.  Those who contribute at least $10 are given a small photo magnet of the adorable little girl shown above.  Contributors of $50 or more receive a small 2016 calendar as our special thank you.  As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, gifts to the Ferret Association are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Thank you.

During the last year:

  • FACT connected with an organization working to rehome animals released from medical laboratories, and was able to match them to a local ferret shelter that would take ferrets.  They work nationwide, so may potentially be able to partner with other shelters to save ferrets freed from experimentation.
  • FACT launched a successful crowdfunding campaign on LoveAnimals.org to raise donations for a special little ferret in need of surgery.
  • FACT created a special Facebook page, Ferret Assn of CT Fundraisers, allowing us to utilize social media in aiding ferrets.  Our first online auction was a benefit for the Canine Distemper Fund.  The next two raised money for the Texas Ferret Lovers Shelter and the Ferret Shelters Directory.
  • FACT coordinated and paid postage for over 110 pounds of bedding shipped to over a dozen different ferret shelters across the country.

 Public Education

  • In December & January, FACT provided assistance to the Ferret Club of New York in their effort to overturn the ban on pet ferrets in New York City.  While ultimately unsuccessful, the outpouring of support made it clear to city officials that the public wants ferrets in the city, just not in pet stores.
  • Our statistics show over 400 ferrets are being rehomed on Craigslist annually—just within Connecticut.  We reach out to advertisers, suggesting they ask for & check references, and to offer shelter services if needed.

Helping Ferrets Around the World: The Ferret Shelters Directory

  • The front page of the Directory now features SAFR—Shop A Ferret Rescue, a search function that allows buyers to look for shelters selling supplies to further their work.
  • Currently over 100 facilities listed, we are adding animal control and spca’s regularly.
  • In 2016, our plan to host a first-ever shelter forum to bring together shelterers to meet, share information, and collaborate on future ferret welfare efforts will become a reality.

Xavier: A Ferret Abroad Canine Distemper Fund

  •  During the past year 9 different shelters, both in the United States and abroad, received vaccination grants totaling over $2,200.

FerretAssn.Org

The Ferret Association of Connecticut focuses on the welfare of domestic ferrets. To improve their lives, we provide factual information, advocate for their protection and safe treatment, and support shelter efforts for lost or abandoned animals.
Among the activities designed to fulfill our mission, FACT:
  • Endorses responsible, humane guardianship;
  • Maintains a shelter which re-homes those adoptable and ensures lifetime care for special needs and elderly ferrets;
  • Publishes unbiased care, behavior and general healthcare information; and
  • Offers technical assistance to other shelters and organizations caring for companion ferrets.

Lia's Story

In 2013, when a kind family with limited financial resources rescued a ferret with health issues, we accepted him as a Foster, then obtained & paid for ongoing medical care.  Later, when his family came across a baby ferret being abused, she was brought to our shelter.  She received care and vaccinations.  In time, a great home applied to adopt her.  Your donations ensured FACT could help.  Lia needed all of us working together for her happy ending.
