5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Collective Spaces
2500 University Ave.

Enter into the studios of Collective Spaces to kick-off a yearlong celebration of economic and creative development in the Zone. As the first featured enterprise in the "CEZ: We Make It Here" project, they will be hosting a pop-up mixer on January 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Collective Spaces, 2500 University Ave. W.

Collective Spaces is a shared costume shop space that has grown into a supportive creative community that, along with several other textile artists and businesses, is making this unassuming building in the CEZ a regional hub for artistry in needle and thread. Collective Spaces is home to a multitude of artists including: Tulip Design, Judy Hornbacher, Amy B. Kaufman, Sarah Thorson, and Dunwoody students and graduates of the Industrial Sewing Program. By providing a unique and affordable space for costume makers and textile artists, Collective Spaces offers an excellent opportunity for artists to launch their own business or house an established one. They also offer sewing lessons, and are looking for new ways to contribute to and connect with the surrounding community.

With the aim of growing this burgeoning textile community, Collective Spaces is the first featured enterprise in the “CEZ: We Make It Here” project, which will highlight a new creative enterprise in the Zone every month in 2016 through August. As part of the project, they will also unveil a unique textile display in the storefront window at 2506 University Ave. to draw the attention of passersby and highlight the work of this unique creative community thriving in the Zone.

C4Ward: Arts And Culture Along the Green Line

Creative Enterprise Zone Tour

We had the pleasure of giving some wonderful folks a tour of the Creative Enterprise Zone as part of C4ward: Arts and Culture along the Green Line last month. Though you can only scratch the surface of the depth of creativity and enterprise that thrives in the Zone in a single day, we had a great time showing off some of the many highlights of this part of the Central Corridor. We hope you'll come out and explore more for yourself! Here are a few photos of the day. View the whole album on our Facebook page

Smallest Museum Continues to Pique Imaginations, Inspire Creativity at Workhorse Coffee Bar

This December, CEZ artist Joshua W. Murray took a look at the history of the Security Building and surrounding area with an inquisitive collage installation in the Smallest Museum outside Workhorse Coffee Bar. Using his own photographs along with archived historical images of the building, he created a collage that resembles a digital glitch. Several QR codes placed within the collage lead to web pages that tell an extended history of the building and the Raymond-University intersection. If you haven’t explored the installation yourself, yet, head over to Workhorse Coffee Bar, 2399 University Ave. W. to check it out before it’s gone! Learn more about the artist and the project here.

Coming to the Smallest Museum in February, Artist Anne Jin Soo Preston’s Smallest Museum Installation will feature a miniature crocheted replica of the coffee shop, including contributions from the community that focus on different themes such as Sci-Fi, Beach, and Prehistoric. Read all about it in this feature in the December Issue of the Park Bugle.

Preston will also host workshops on Guerilla Yarn Art at Workhorse February 6 and 20 from 2-4pm. She’ll also hold more casual gatherings for yarn enthusiasts February 14 and 28. Check in at Workhorse Coffee Bar for details.

What is the Creative Enterprise Zone?

The Creative Enterprise Zone, located mid-city between St. Paul and Minneapolis, has the goal to be recognized as a center of creativity and enterprise, a place where many people make a living by their creative capacities.

Showcasing a mixture of urban-industrial and innovative enterprises, the Creative Enterprise Zone promises to be a fertile laboratory of entrepreneurship, business incubation, artistic endeavor and eclectic urban design. Located along the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line at the hub of the Raymond Station area, this dynamic nucleus of artisans and industry provides a unique sense of place that captures the imagination.

Regionally significant due to the central location and ease of access, the community offers a symbiotic mix of live and work opportunities. Cultivation of diverse, affordable spaces for entrepreneurial businesses, artisans and residents, and support systems for a tightly interconnected creative community, are high priorities.
