HSAS Welcomes New Executive Director Dean Job

                        Dean Job, Executive Director

The Executive Council is pleased to announce that the process of filling the Executive Director position has been successful and would like to inform HSAS members of the hiring of Mr. Dean Job.
Dean brings with him near twenty years of experience within the union movement.  This experience dates back to 1996 when he was elected as a local Vice-President for the National Syndicate of Montreal Neurological Hospital Employees. He subsequently occupied the position of local President in 1998. In addition to his local duties in 1998, Dean was elected to the position of Executive Committee Vice-President for the Montreal Council of Hospital Syndicates Inc. His responsibilities included the oversight of bargaining units across four Montreal Hospital sites.

In 1999 Dean took on the role as Executive Committee President and in 2000, negotiated his first provincial collective agreement. He held this position until 2005 when the Quebec government passed anti-union laws restricting bargaining units to a maximum of four within each healthcare employer. Once the dust had settled, a new local union was born under the name of McGill University Health Centre Employees Union – CSN.
From 2005 to 2011, Dean served as an Executive Committee Site Vice-President and along with twelve other executive committee members was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the largest health care union in Quebec representing close to 5000 health care employees across multiple McGill University hospital sites.

In 2011, after many years of elected service Dean decided it was time to consider a staff position within the labour field.  In April 2011, Dean accepted a Labour Relations Officer position with the New Brunswick
Union of Public and Private Employees.

In early 2012, after less than a year of serving in that role, Dean was asked to take on the duties of Director of Labour Relations for the organization.  His responsibilities included the management of all aspects related to servicing the membership and has remained in this position until the present.

In addition to having an extensive background as a union leader, Dean brings a strong passion for the union movement as a whole.   Many other qualities have served him well over the years.  He has shown himself to be a team player who is highly motivated, detail-oriented, resourceful, and creative.

Dean is married with two children and all are excited and looking forward to moving to Saskatchewan. Details of Dean’s official starting date have yet to be determined, but we are looking at dates later this spring or early summer. We will update the membership once this has been finalized. The plan is that Dean will be working out of the Regina office.

The Executive Council is looking forward to working with Dean as our new Executive Director, and on behalf of the HSAS membership and Staff, we would like to welcome him and his family to Saskatchewan.
Your Questions Answered - Field Hours

Each month HSAS Labour Relation Officers receive a number of questions from HSAS members. This month we answer questions asked by members who work field hours. These questions include:
  1. What does our Union contract say about banking time in lieu?
  2. Is there anything in the contract stating that only patient care time is considered acceptable for the time in lieu banking of hours?
  3. Would non-patient care such as record keeping, filing, stat inputting, meetings, and travel count as time in lieu?
  4. Is it acceptable to bank 15 minutes? Or does it have to be ½ hour or hour increments?
