Northeast Metro 916 Career & Technical Center / Winter 2016

From the Principal

It's a GREAT time to be a part of the 916 Career & Tech family!

For those of you who I haven't had a chance to connect with, my name is Jill Stewart-Kellar and I am in my first year at the 916 Career and Technical Center. We just celebrated National Career and Technical Education Month in February, and with that in mind, I am excited to bring you this mid-year newsletter jam-packed with exciting information about the 916 Career and Technical Center. I am amazed by the many exciting opportunities our students have here to gain college credit while engaging in hands-on, rigorous career and technical education programs. I am also encouraged by the strong partnership we have with Century College and many other post-secondary education institutions. We have coursework that is articulated with over fifteen post-secondary institutions and growing.

Please, continue reading.  We have much to be proud of here at the 916 Career and Technical Center and don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@916CareerTech).  And check out your local newspapers and TV stories. We are getting a lot of attention as we celebrate National CTE Month at 916 Career Tech!

Respectfully,

Jill Stewart-Kellar
916 Career & Technical Center Principal

Check out what students have to say about 916 Career Tech!

Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice Students Mentor at Oakdale Elementary

65 students from the Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice Program gained a newfound understanding of community involvement through a hands-on service learning project in partnership with Oakdale Elementary in Maplewood. Each 916 Career & Tech student mentor was paired with a “buddy” at the elementary school, who they got to know through writing each other as pen pals.

In December, the buddies had the opportunity to meet in person and spend the day mentoring the elementary students in classroom activities, arts and crafts and recess. At the end of the day,916 Career & Tech students presented their buddy with the gift of two handmade woven hats so that the elementary students could “get one, give one” and pay it forward with kindness and gift one of the hats to a friend or family member. “Volunteering and helping the community gives students a good image of law enforcement,” said one of the CTC participants.

Advisory Board Breakfast

The 916 Career & Tech programs rely on our advisory boards to advise, support and guide our programs.  Advisory boards consist of local business members, post-secondary partners, community members and former students.  We show them our gratitude each year by pairing the fall meeting with an appreciation breakfast.  Thank you Advisory Board members!

3M Partnership

Since 1978, 3M has donated thousands of personal protective equipment to the 916 Career and Technical Center Automotive, Diesel, Engineering and Construction programs. In exchange, our welding instructor, Tony Waldner provides hands-on training for 3M staff and partners, giving them the opportunity to experience the equipment in a real-life setting.

Rihm Kensworth Field Trip

Our Diesel Trucks and Engine Technology students experienced a 'day in the life' of a diesel truck business thanks to Rihm Kenworth.  Students had an interactive opportunity to see what it’s like to be a Truck Technician, as well as view demonstrations on engine diagnostics, DPF (diesel particulate filter) cleaning and air brakes were provided. We are grateful for our many community and business partners.
