Eisbahn

Eisbahn is OPEN! Bring your family and friends to enjoy a holiday tradition. For only $10 per person, you can skate all day and come-and-go as many times during the day as you please. Pizza, snacks and drinks are available to purchase at the concession stand. Gloves, socks and caps can also be purchased.

“The Real Meaning of Eisbahn”

A message from Derek Spence, Eisbahn Operations Manager

Good evening,
Heidi and I just wanted to write a quick note to tell you all of a couple of incidences/ observations at Eisbahn that we have had the opportunity to notice over the past week.

While I know that Eisbahn is looked at as kind of a pain by many who have to volunteer for its operation (including myself), I hope that I, and everyone else, will be able to recognize that not only is this a great fundraiser for the school, but it is also, and even more importantly, a way of bringing happiness into the lives of children who might not have such a happy home life. There are so many different life stories that come through our gates. We, as flawed humans, tend to forget that each soul entering our "skating rink” is unique and loved by God just as much as He loves us.

We, by God's Blessing, have the opportunity to give an hour or so of happiness to the life of a child or an adult who might be going through a most unhappy time.

I noticed many teenage kids (12-15 year old) tonight who were skating and having innocent fun, as opposed to drinking alcohol, smoking pot, or participating in any other inappropriate behavior. For the time we have them, they are safe, happy, and staying out of trouble.

I also had the distinct pleasure of meeting a beautiful little 6 year old girl named Lyla, whose grandmother was unable to remove her skates so she could take her to the restroom. I offered assistance, and immediately found myself caught up in Lyla's story. She informed me, upon my helping her, that her "mommy and daddy were currently separated", and that she was "sad" about it because it was Christmas time and she didn’t know who she would spend Christmas with. However, she very much enjoyed her skates and the hot chocolate. She was a bright and happy child despite her plight, and I felt honored that she had decided to confide her little heart to the "skate guy". It reminded me that this is much more than a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to bring happiness into a very broken world that is gasping for joy.

There are hundreds of kids like Lyla that enter our world every day that Eisbahn is open. It is hard work, and cuts in to "our" time considerably. But there is a much larger story here than most recognize (including me, until tonight). It is easy to get jaded by the inconvenience of it all. It is the enemy's desire to destroy such a great ministry as he loves to destroy the hearts and lives of our children. It is worth all of the effort and expense to bring happiness to just one life, and yet we get to reach so many more.

It is late, and I have had a long day, and I suspect this might come across as a pep talk, but I wanted to share my thoughts while they were still fresh on my heart. And my true desire is to let everyone know that there is so much more at work here than just a skating rink/fundraiser.

December 18

All School Chapel: Christmas Carols ~ Great Hall

Grammar School Village

Kindergarteners--enjoyed growing crystal trees...thank you to the Olafson family for the extra fun science project.
1^st Graders--enjoyed making tambourines to enable them to make a joyful noise to the Lord.
2^nd Graders--talked about the composer Tchaikovsky, read the Nutcracker Story and watched part of the ballet.
3^rd Graders--worked hard in the kitchen...surprise, surprise.
4^th Graders--wondered at the birth of Christ Jesus, our Lord, and what it must have been like for the nearby shepherds to see and hear the glory of the Lord as the angels shared it with them on that Holy Night.
5^th Grader--completed Egypt research reports and presented them with visuals. We also enjoyed a deep study of the Birth of Christ.

Kids Youth Ranch…service project

Thank you for your generous donations to our November/December service project. We were able to donate $250 cash, $100 in gift cards, Under Armour gear, coats, clothing, pajamas, basketballs and many other items to the boys at the youth ranch. The donated cash was used to purchase Lego's, roller blades, razors, games and other specific items that Antuan and Armando requested. Thank you again students and families for your kindness and generosity.

Sophomores Christmas Caroling

On Friday, December 11th, the Sophomore class sent a large contingent to both the Knopp 2 and the Windcrest nursing homes to bring colorful Christmas Wreath decorations for the residents' doors and also to sing Christmas carols with the folks. A big thank you to Mrs. Martha Lucas, Mrs. Suzanne McComack, and Mrs. Bel Tucker for helping drive the kids over to the nursing homes. As Mrs. Lucas played the joyful sounds upon the piano, the students sang for the residents as they made requests for their favorite Christmas carol! The 10th graders made the door decorations in art class that week, creating 96 wreaths to adorn the residents' doors. Room 110 was a green and red Christmas factory! What fun we had meeting the residents and shaking hands! Mrs. Mac's mother, Nancy Martin said, "Our favorite part was when they sang "Jingle Bells" and then shook hands and spoke to everyone. They were so polite and personable! I hope they come back for another visit!" Thank you, Mrs. Lucas, for planning this service event for the Sophomore class.

Please note that Heritage School (Herzog Hall) closes daily at 4:00 p.m. All students must be picked up by 4:00 p.m. unless they are participating in an athletic practice. Thank you.

ATTENTION PARENTS: PLEASE do not park in either of the circle drives in front of the school. These are fire lanes as well as drive through lanes and you are hindering the flow of traffic if you park your car there. Please use the provided parking spaces if you need to park and come into the school.

Seriously folks! PLEASE no parking in the fire lanes. Thank you for your cooperation.

Note from the Athletic Director-

Greetings! Just a quick shout out to all the families with students in sports. I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to work with your students. We are working hard to provide a positive challenging program. The students have stepped up and received it. With their commitment, you can see the level of fitness and athleticism improving.
Especially with our younger athletes, please continue supporting your kids with good positive feedback. You should be very proud of each of them. They are gaining experience and skills, but it does take time. It also takes hard work and they are stepping up. This adversity is what builds good character. It doesn’t happen overnight and maybe not even in one season. We are trying to build a program. I love what I am seeing on and off the court and field with these students. Your part is important- positive reinforcement to keep working and trying. Never give up!
Thank you to the parents who have volunteered in any capacity during the fall sports season and now in basketball. I appreciate all my drivers, gate keepers, scoreboard and bookkeepers, team parents, set and clean- up crew. We couldn’t have our competitions without your help. You are being a great example for your children through service. We all need to do our part to teach them about giving and serving others. Thank you!!
Enjoy this special time with your family. Time goes by way too fast. Let us slow down and enjoy the best birthday ever. Merry Christmas!

Coats for Tots

Student Council is collecting Coats for Tots for the Hill Country Community Needs Council in Gillespie County. Donation boxes are located in Herzog Hall and the Grammar School.

Student Council will lead the school in Christmas Carols on December 18 10:35 a.m. in the Great Hall after the final that morning. The Upper School will award the winner of the Ugly Sweater Contest during time.

PSAT Scores Delayed

Besides our many Christmas season traditions, early December routines usually include the distribution of October PSAT scores. According to a bulletin from College Board, that occasion will be postponed until after our semester break:
scores will be available to students online Jan 7; schools will receive paper score reports by Jan 29. Those paper score reports will be matched up with each student's actual test booklet (with scratch-work) and given to students to trouble-shoot their errors as soon as possible. (You may remember that this PSAT used the new SAT format.)

Early College Credit Registration Open for Spring

Central Texas College has opened its registration portal for Spring Semester classes. You should start the online application process at: http://www.ctcd.edu/students/prospective-students/how-to-enroll/texas-students/ Complete the one-time online application to CTC, track down your SAT scores and make an appointment with Kristy Kothe at the Hill Country University Center (254-616-3401) You must be a junior or senior to register and are limited to two courses per semester.
More independent souls may find the ONLINE early college offerings at LeTourneau University more suitable: http://www.letu.edu/_Admissions/dualcredit/ Although LETU online students do not have designated online class times, they do have weekly deadlines for graded work. LETU courses cost about $360 each.
Early college credit not only saves thousands of tuition dollars ($328/course at CTC compared to $950 at A&M and $3636 at Baylor), the gift of time and flexibility in your future college schedule can be more advantageous in pursuing a minor or double major. Also, the seniority attained by early college credit can make a huge difference at freshman registration. Of course, early college credits afford little advantage at all if your chosen major degree plan does not call for those courses or your target college does not accept the transfer. Mrs. Sauer can help you find that information and help you make a plan.
