Who is Civica?
This week we received this email from a resident:
“Perhaps you tell me who Civica are and why they find it necessary to send a letter to an 82 year old who lives on her own”.

As reported in our 22nd November update, the Council has commissioned a firm called ‘Civica’ to review the Council Tax payers who live alone and so claim the single person’s discount.

Civica is asking for information on ‘other’ persons living at their address. It appears that even having a parcel delivered to someone else at your address can trigger a receipt of their letter.

Mark is helping the resident with this issue.
If you receive a letter, please get in-touch so that we can contact the correct department to resolve it.

New school proposal on Alice Stevens Site
We recently reported that a new school for children with severe learning difficulties is to be built on the old Alice Stevens School Site because the Tiverton School in Coundon will close
.
Local residents are invited to a consultation meeting at Whitley Abbey Primary School on Friday 15th January 2016 5pm till 5.30pm. Click here for further details

Abbey Road Closure for Whitley Business Park Water Mains Installation
On Wednesday morning, Roger noticed some people in hi-viz jackets on Abbey Road. He was told that Severn Trent Water are going to dig up one side of Abbey Road, from the junction of The Avenue down the road towards the bridge, then onto the JLR emergency Road, to put down new pipes. This work will start on the 4th January.

After advice from Roger they are now planning to put barriers up on the weekend before they start the work to ensure that the JLR cars don’t affect their work. Letters will be delivered to all households on the road, plus on all cars parked on Abbey Road that might block their work

Afternoon Roger,

Good to meet up today on Abbey Road.

Please find attached construction drawing showing the route the new water main will be taking, also the traffic management drawings showing the traffic management that will be used whilst the works are taking place. Customer letters will be delivered on 21.12.2015 notifying customers of the works. Any help regarding getting the cars moved would be much appreciated.

Hillfray Drive and Ashington Grove - Bin Collection Petition
A few months ago, Roger & Hazel submitted a petition to the Council for the residents of Hillfray Drive and Ashington Grove with respect to their intermittent bin collect.

This petition was considered by the Cabinet Member for Public Services at a meeting last Tuesday. Both Roger and Hazel attended and spoke about the problems with the Bin Lorries not being able to access the close due to residents’ cars being parked at the entrance and on the bend in Hillfray Drive.

The Council is going to again write to residents in the area including Ashington Grove asking residents to park considerately and not block the entrance on bin days (Tuesday). The Council will also be consulting later in the New Year on putting double yellow lines at the junction with Hillfray Drive and Ashington Grove, also some lines on the bend in Hillfray Drive.

This will coincide with the consultation for double yellow lines on all junctions in the Whitley area. Which is as a result of residents’ requests to try to solve the problems with JLR workers parking inconsiderably on Whitley’s roads and pavements. We will keep you informed when the consultation starts.

New Signs
A resident spotted that the new sign in New Union Street states that numbers 2 and 3 are Finham buses whereas they have always been Fenside.

Roger contacted National Express who then passed it onto Centro. Hopefully this error will soon be corrected.

Pavement resurfacing on Charminster Drive, Fenside Avenue and Gregory Hood Road
Residents affected by this work will soon receive this letter:-
I am writing to let you know that we will soon be resurfacing the pavements on Charminster Drive (Fenside Avenue to opposite Gregory Hood Road and Fenside Avenue to number 30), Fenside Avenue (number 31 to Fred Lee Grove) and Gregory Hood Road (Charminster Drive to Leaf Lane both sides). This is part of the Council’s on–going work to repair the city’s pavements. This incorporates replacing the existing slabs with tarmac, installing edging kerbs to gardens where necessary and renewing existing bollards.
The work is scheduled to take place on Monday 4 January 2016 and will take approximately 13 weeks to complete.

London Rd/ Seymour Close
In August Hazel forwarded this resident’s request onto the Council.
Hi Hazel & Roger.
I know there are a lot of roadworks going on at present, but it is times like these that you notice what is lacking in your area. As you come up the London Road from town, past the Chace Hotel, through the traffic lights and then have to turn, within yards, past the lights, at peaks times especially, cars get backed up behind you whilst you are waiting to cross over two lanes to go into Seymour Close. A right hand turn lane would be very beneficial, but realise that, especially since there are now two lanes for straight ahead at the traffic lights, that this would not be possible. However, traffic coming from the opposite direction towards town, always block the entrance to Seymour Close, and even if someone is kind hearted enough to let you through, there is always the worry of other vehicles on the inside lane that you cannot see. What I am asking therefore is a "box" marking on the London Road, which traffic cannot enter and block the entrance to Seymour Close. Would this be at all possible to consider do you think please?

After a lot of chasing this response was received from Stewart Adams, Senior Technician – Traffic Management

Yes I have looked at this. I’ll be drawing up a plan to install ‘Keep Clear’ markings at the junction, rather than a yellow box. I’m not sure of timescales for installation but we’ll try and get it done as soon as possible.

King's Church Remembrance Service
This week Mark attended the remembrance service at Cheylesmore Community Centre arranged and led by members of the King's Church Community.

Approximately 40 Cheylesmore residents attended the service. It was a mixture of prayer, traditional hymn, modern music and an opportunity for anyone to light a candle to reflect on those who are no longer with us.

Message from the Coventry Samaritans – “Open as Usual”
While we hope that Christmas and New Year will be a happy time for you all, we know that this will not be the case for everyone. If you are upset or troubled and need to talk to somebody, Coventry Samaritans will be open as usual 24 hours a day throughout the holiday period.

You can talk to them in complete confidence, however difficult your thoughts and however alone you feel.

Tollbar Island Delay Confirmed
The majority of the work will be done by December 2016 but the project will not be completed until 2017.

Rubbish on Leaf Lane Cleared
Please do contact Roger and Hazel's secretary on 024 7683 1101, if you spot a problem.
Dear Hazel
Please pass on my thanks to Helen for getting yet another pile of rubbish cleared today. I phoned at 11.20am and they had gone when I checked at 1.20pm. Must be some sort of record. Much appreciated.

Rotary Santa Sleigh Collection in Cheylesmore Ward
The Rotary Santa Sleigh visited our area on 2 nights and an amazing total amount of £2366.20 was collected.
Roger helped in last Tuesday’s night ride and he was very grateful to the Crecy Road residents who supplied "Santa’s Helpers" with hot mince pies. Luckily for everyone the rain stopped when Santa arrived at the Daventry Parade shops. Many excited children were able to sit on Santa’s knee prior to the tour. Due to the installation of new gas pipes on Galey Road, a detour was necessary which meant that many more streets were visited by Santa.

Mistletoe trees
A resident contacted Roger about the large amount of mistletoe on the trees on the green on Stoney Road. This reply was received from Tim Wetherhill, Arboricultural Services Officer, Trees & Woodlands Team

The Mistletoe is being harvested by our Tree Wardens and sold for the benefit of the Lord Mayors charity.

The trees will then be removed. The replacement trees were planted a couple of years ago and have established successfully.

Just been informed that the ‘Cheylesmore Mistletoe Sales’ raised £875, 1 euro, 20 cents and 2 dimes for the Lord Mayor’s Charities. The Tree Wardens are exhausted, but very pleased with their efforts.
