Lyneham Commons exists for the community, so we would love to hear your thoughts about what is working well and what could be improved. We would also like to set a regular day and time for our working bees- please help us work out when would be most convenient for you!

2015 in review

While Lyneham Commons was officially launched in July – and what fun was that! – there has been a tremendous amount of work before and after that great day.  Here are some highlights:
  • We have had 108 volunteers at our working bees
  • We have contributed around 660 volunteer hours, just at the working bees
  • Several people have contributed well over 20 hours each, just at the working bees.
  • We have had 7 working bees and many smaller clean up or watering activities
  • We have learned stuff, with wonderful people providing talks and how-tos:
    • Cam- swales and berms
    • Matt – planting bare rooted trees
    • Ken – pruning fruit trees
    • Sue – support plants and food forest design
  • We have had more than 13 commoners planning meetings, 4 water group meetings and several design meetings.
  • We had some wonderful media coverage – in the Canberra Times, on 2XX and 2CC, and of course, Costa Georgiardis who said a new food forest initiative in Lyneham as a “project of national significance”.
  • We have completed the Staging Plan for next year and finalised our agreements with the ACT Government.
And, of course, we have commenced our planting:
  • 7 fruit trees (white mulberry, pomegranate, 2 hazelnuts, 2 apples and a plum)
  • supporting natives
  • heaps of green manure plants including seed bombs. The snow peas were delicious!
Other gardening stuff included:
  • digging 3.5 swales
  • moving more than 40m3 of mulch
Most importantly, we had a great time – sharing food after each event and getting to know neighbours and our volunteers. We are all looking forward to seeing everyone back again in 2016!

An introduction to swales

Wondering what all those ditches we dug back in July and August were all about? Check out "A short introduction to swales" on our website, written by our friend Silas Brown.
