Happy Holidays!

As the year comes to a close we want to thank you for your support and share our wishes for a happy holiday season.  We celebrated the season in a fun way this year by holding a lighting ceremony and open house at the Depot.  Members can read a bit more about it in the Re-Echo which will hit mailboxes in January.  Below, you can read more about our visit this month to the 2nd grade classrooms at Susan Lindgren Elementary, and a fun new event happening in February!   Remember that we rely on your generosity through membership and other giving opportunities to continue our work in the community. If you're not already a member of the Historical Society, think about joining today!

History for 2nd Graders! We recently had the honor and pleasure of visiting the 2nd graders at Susan Lindgren Elementary school.  Our visit was part of their December history unit in which they discuss how history connects to the present day.  We shared five interesting stories with them about these topics: Trains, TB Walker, New Street Names, Shopping Centers and Schools.  The kids were all very engaged and asked lots of questions.  They were most interested to learn about the schools, specifically their school and its namesake.  You can brush up on your history of the school here. Along with our other youth programming, we hope to expand this initiative to all the elementary schools and make it an annual program to ensure our young residents have a good appreciation for their local history.  If you are interested in being a presenter in the schools please email us.  We will need engaging presenters comfortable with an audience of 7- and 8-year-olds!
Come learn about the history of beer, wine and spirits at SLP's own brewery! On Tuesday, February 9th, we will share a new presentation all about the history of the many famous drinking establishments in St. Louis Park.  We will also get to know a bit about our own brewery, Steel Toe Brewing.  If you happen to have any great photos or stories we could use for the program please let us know.  The program will be held at the brewery.  More details will be shared next month but mark your calendar now for February 9th!
History Spotlight - Our many railroads

One of the stories we shared with the Susan Lindgren 2nd graders was the long history we have with railroads, stretching back to when our city was named for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad into the future when the new light rail train will bring the return of a passenger depot at Wooddale and 36th Streets.  We also briefly shared the story of a railroad named....for a horse!  You can read a very detailed history of the Dan Patch Railroad here on our website. We also have a small group of volunteers who meet occasionally to discuss our railroad history and piece together additional facts for our historical records.  If you are a train enthusiast and would like to get in on the conversation, please let us know!
Have You Heard?

McGarvey / Skippy site redevelopment.  With its location near the Depot and alongside the railroad tracks, we have an interest in the success of this unique redevelopment project.  The developer, a non-profit called PLACE, hopes to build a mixed use complex centered around the creative community (artists, artisans, craft artists, scientists, inventors, technologists, and makers).  If you consider yourself part of the creative community, please take their survey which will help the developer better understand the work and living needs of "creatives."

Volunteers are always needed! We have lots of opportunities including office work, writing, editing, researching, event planning, merchandising, fundraising, and social media planning.  Visit our volunteer page for a little more info, or just contact us and we can find something that will be meaningful to you.
