Welcome to the final edition of the Sydney RBN's newsletter for 2015. In it, we feature a review of the latest event with Tahs' coach Daryl Gibson, a review of the RBN in 2015, and a preview for some exciting changes we are making for 2016.

December Speaker's Presentation

Daryl Gibson was a key member of the 2014 NSW Waratahs Super Rugby-winning coaching staff, and was appointed as the Head Coach in July 2015, succeeding the current Wallabies coach, Michael Cheika.
Daryl, who won 19 Test Caps as an All Black centre between 1999 and 2002, was an Assistant Coach for both the New Zealand Maori All Blacks (2010-2012) and the Crusaders (2008-2012), before arriving in Sydney to become Cheika's assistant.
Between 1996 and 2002, he amassed 158 provincial caps, winning 4 Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders, and 2 NPC titles with Canterbury. He then moved to the United Kingdom and played a season for Bristol, before switching to the Leicester Tigers, where he obtained 92 caps and won the Premiership in 2006-07. His last act as a player was with Glasgow Warriors in 2007-08, where he also served as a backline coach.
Interviewed by Greg Mumm, Daryl shared some learnings and insights from both his playing career and his current role as Head Coach of the Waratahs. Daryl’s career success was supported by his strong values around loyalty, respect and hard work, and these values are also evidenced in his coaching style today.
Daryl is keen to continue the emphasis on culture within the existing Waratahs team. In doing so, he intends to build on Cheika’s foundations. This includes using the senior players to act as leaders in developing the culture in the team, and enacting an approach that focuses on leadership first, then culture, and then performance. Daryl’s key learnings in moving to his current position are that of being surrounded and supported by good people, as well as the need to develop good people management skills.
2016 will be a year of transformation for the Waratahs, with plenty of talent to look out for and some great young players coming through.

2015 Sydney RBN Year in Review
|
|
|
During 2015, event attendance has more than doubled, with a higher ‘C’ suite representation. There are several reasons to which we can likely attribute our growth, but the most significant are the venues (Royal Automobile Club and Avondale) and the speakers.
An increasingly higher calibre of speakers – some highlights were Bill Pulver (CEO of the ARU), Anne Sherry AO (CEO of Carnival Australia) and of course our July event aboard the HMAS Canberra with the Fleet Commander of the Australia Navy. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate 25 years of wheelchair rugby.
With the Sydney RBN leading the way, the Australian RBN also established solid Melbourne and Perth RBN committees.

The Sydney RBN is going to be even bigger and better in 2016. Here are some reasons why:
- Recently, we have successfully registered under the NSW Associations Incorporation, which will open up a number of financial opportunities going forward, involving the charities we support, venues, logistics and formal membership options.
- We are well underway with finalising our 2016 calendar of events, and we are also planning to hold a charity golf day later in the year.
- In putting together the 2016 program of events, we are very excited by the options we are working on. Specifically, we are focusing on a range of topics which feature in sports AND have great currency and relevance to business life.
- The RBN has secured tickets to the 2016 Wallabies v England test match on Saturday 25th June at Allianz Stadium. Further details to be sent in the January 2016 newsletter.
- Our 2016 events will represent some fantastic sponsorship opportunities, which will be publicised in the New Year. Please contact Adrian Skeggs (details below) directly for further interest.
- With Sydney RBN events, we will be looking to charge a small entry fee to support hosting venues and our charities.
