Community News

SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH: The Brookline School Committee has launched a national search for the next Superintendent of Schools. Recruitment of candidates is underway with the goal of selecting a new Superintendent by the end of March and to begin leadership in school district in July 2016. With the rapid growth of our school system and the ongoing commitment from our community, it is essential to find a new superintendent who can help us build for the future while continuing our long-standing success. The School Committee welcomes community engagement in this process and is asking for your help. Your voice is important and valued, and there are several ways you can be involved.

Community-wide Forums open to all community members are scheduled on Jan. 4, 5, and 6th. An online survey will be launched on Dec. 21.  These are ways you can share your views on the characteristics you consider important for the next Superintendent  For more information go to www.brookline.k12.ma.us/supersearch.

SAFE HOLIDAY TIPS FROM B-PEN (BROOKLINE PARENT EDUCATION NETWORK)
The holiday season is a period of connecting with family and friends, of rituals and religious occasions, celebrations and parties.  It is also a season often associated with increased alcohol consumption during many of these festivities. And as pre-teens and teens on school vacation find themselves with time on their hands, it can become a season of alcohol and marijuana experimentation. Brookline students say that their number one source for obtaining alcohol is sneaking it from the liquor cabinet at home. And with the legalization of marijuana for medicinal use, adolescents also may be drawn to pot under the impression that it offers a safe way to get high.  As a community, there are a few basic steps we can all take to keep our children safe and substance free over the school vacation.  Check out B-PEN’s “Safe Holiday Tip Sheet” at www.B-PEN.org for ideas on how to talk to your kids about substances and set a good example on the home front.
B-PEN WISHES EVERYONE A SAFE & HEALTHY  HOLIDAY SEASON!

“You gain every strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face…you must do the thing you think you cannot do.”  ~Eleanor Roosevelt

It is great to see all of you at our grade level events and the winter concerts.  As parents you are busy during the holiday season with all the events that the season brings.   As we talk with students about their favorite holiday traditions, it is wonderful to hear all that you are doing to make meaningful memories for your children.

Thank you to all our parents who partnered with teachers to discuss student progress at conferences.  Also, thanks to our teachers for the extra time they put in to learning a new reporting system.   Ultimately, we want families to feel informed about the progress their children are making toward meeting grade-level learning goals.    We are interested in your feedback regarding accessing the reports from the security portal.

It is exciting to let you know that Brookline Foundation Grant awarded an innovative idea grant of $1000 to Bob Thomas, Jesse Kirdahy and Nora Cullen.  The grant was to purchase two classroom sets of programmable affordable Robots from the Wyss Institute at Harvard.  These robots will be used to teach programming code to Driscoll 5th grade students and to students in 7th and 8th grade elective.

We wish all our families a re-energizing, joyous winter break.    Best wishes as we welcome the 2016 New Year!

Regards, Eileen and David
