1/7/2016 LICKING COUNTY, OHIO –The Licking County Health Department (LCHD) would like to remind residents that January is National Radon Action Month. Licking County has the highest average indoor radon levels in the state and high levels of radon can pose significant health risks.
“I encourage all residents to test their homes for Radon,” said Joe Ebel, Licking County Health Commissioner. “Because Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas, the only way to tell if you have high levels in your home is to conduct a simple test.”
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is normally dispersed into outdoor air but can reach harmful levels when trapped inside buildings. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. It is estimated that 70 percent of Licking County homes contain elevated levels of Radon.
Testing your home for elevated levels of radon is simple and inexpensive. Free Radon test kits can be obtained from the Health Department by visiting their website at www.lickingcohealth.org.
