January 2016
Welcome to the Windsor Update.

This e-newsletter is provided by the Corporation of the City of Windsor.  Our hope is to share a selection of stories that Windsorites either need to know, should know, or might just like to know about in our community.

In each issue, we’ll update you about events and schedules, meetings and announcements, and more. We’ll profile plans we’re working on and offer a variety of opportunities to share your own feedback.

The Windsor Update joins our website citywindsor.ca, our municipal Facebook page, our Twitter account, and our YouTube channel as some of the ways we’re engaging with you and communicating the great things happening in our city. We encourage you to create your own direct connection by signing up, “friending,” “following” and “liking” each of these opportunities for engagement.

The Windsor Update will be a monthly publication to start, but with room to grow.

Thanks for your interest in our community, and please feel free to let us know what you think of our newsletter!

Warm Weather Delays Ice at Charles Clark Square

The ongoing warm temperatures in Windsor are delaying the creation of an ice surface at Charles Clark Square.  But, because of a roof and a larger refrigeration plant, Lanspeary Lions rink is open.

The Lanspeary Lions Outdoor Rink (1250 Langlois Avenue) opened for rentals on December 8. This ice pad doesn’t suffer the direct sun and rain effects that Charles Clark Square rink does, and thus ice is easier to form.

City staff hope to see a consistently low temperature in early January, which would lead to ice at Charles Clark early in the New Year.  In the meantime, more free public skating hours are being added at Lanspeary to help accommodate those missing out at Charles Clark Square.  For those who take advantage of the skate lending program at All Saints Church, they do loan out skates for use at other arenas besides Charles Clark Square, and this includes Lanspeary as well.  Skates are distributed on Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for individuals or groups.

Learn more about public skating times at our Lanspeary Lions Rink page. For rentals, browse for availability at www.reconnectwindsor.ca and call 519-253-2300 to reserve. Times are subject to change, so please call to confirm.

Streetlight LED Conversion Project Underway

When Sir Adam Beck ceremonially switched on Windsor’s first electric street lights in front of the Windsor Armouries in the fall of 1914, the move connected the city to the provincial grid and the longest transmission line in the world at that time (250 miles).  That was just over 100 years ago.

Now, the City of Windsor is embarking on another first: the conversion of more than 22,000 street lights from the current high-pressure sodium bulbs to a more efficient LED version

The total cost of the conversion project is approximately $16.6 million.  However, the city could recoup approximately $2.13 million of that from the retrofit program of the Independent Electricity System Operator, a Crown corporation operating Ontario’s electricity market.  It estimated that approximately 32 million dollars could be saved over 15 years on electricity and maintenance costs.

In addition, other environmental and safety benefits include:

  • Major reduction in the Windsor’s street lighting carbon footprint
  • Increased vehicular and pedestrian safety through better visibility, object recognition and colour rendition
  • Elimination of obtrusive sky glow, as LED fixtures are certified by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) as being dark sky friendly
  • Assistance in satisfying the goals and recommendations outlined in the City’s Environmental Master Plan and Community Strategic Plan.

EnWin Energy Ltd. is acting as the City’s the Project Manager and the fixtures will be supplied by LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. (LRL) and installed by Enersource Power Services Inc. (EPSI).  The old HPS fixtures will be disposed and recycled by Green-Port Environmental Managers Ltd.

Windsor residents will be able to follow along as the project progresses in a couple of ways.  Information on the project, including some commonly asked questions is available in a new video on YouTube and on our LED Street Light Conversion Project page.  Also, a map has been created to allow residents to follow the progress of the project.  A custom layer can be found under "My City" at www.mappmycity.ca.

Reminder: Our Email Domain Has Changed to @citywindsor.ca

Our City of Windsor email domain changed to @citywindsor.ca on June 1, 2015. What's a domain? It's the standard text that comes after the @ in all of our emails. As approved by City Council in May of last year, our domain for addresses previously arranged as "[userID]@city.windsor.on.ca" has now been changed to a simpler and more direct "[userID]@citywindsor.ca" much like our City Website’s address www.citywindsor.ca

The City of Windsor conducts surveys as a means of soliciting ideas and opinions from residents so we can better serve the community as a whole.  Check back often to see if a new survey is ready for your input.
