UF300 Curriculum Change

from J. Riley Caldwell-O'Keefe, Foundational Studies Program

Due to a recent Idaho State Board of Education change, current students who have UF300 as a requirement on their AAR are no longer required to take the course and will see this drop off their AAR by Fall 2016.

SOME IMPORTANT EXCEPTIONS:
  • UF300 is required for students scheduled to graduate Spring 2016.
  • Students in the RN to BS, RRT to BS and RT(R) to BS degree completion programs will still need to take their program specific sections of UF300 to graduate.
  • UF300 will remain a requirement for all MDS and BAS students who do not have an AA/AS or are not core certified.
  • Students who transfer to Boise State with an Applied Associates Degree from a regionally accredited academic institution will place out of UF 100 and be placed in UF 200.
How do you advise a student for whom this applies?
  • Students do not need to change catalogs for this change to apply.
  • Students who enroll in UF300 the course will count as an upper division elective toward graduation credit hour requirements.
  • Students may drop or not enroll in the UF300 course.
    - Make sure they will be able to maintain the credit hours needed for financial aid or other credit hour dependent programs.
    - Help them understand that they will still need to meet the 40 upper-division credit university requirement.
    - Each department may encourage their students to enroll in whatever upper division course/s they find suitable for their students’ degree completion.
NOTE: UF300 will continue to be offered. Click the link for more information about UF300: Personal Responsibility in a Global Community

DLN Policy Reminder

State Board Policy III-N specifies that DLN/Scientific Ways of Knowing courses must be satisfied by courses from two different disciplines, one of which must have a lab component. For example, if a student takes Anthropology 101 they will NOT be able to count another Anthropology DLN as their 2nd DLN. The lab requirement has not changed; students are still required to take 1 DLN with a lab and a 2nd DLN with lab optional. Although this policy is not new, it has not always been clearly or consistently interpreted. Please support your students in following these guidelines.

Involvement Fair January 21st

We all know that getting involved in college helps students stay connected to campus, make new friends, and build leadership skills. Did you know that getting involved may also help students be more successful in the classroom? Our Student Involvement and Leadership Center along with the Boise State Service Learning department will be hosting an Involvement Fair on January 21st 2016 from 2pm-5pm in the Student Union Building (SUB)-Simplot Ballroom. The fair is a great opportunity for students to connect with organizations on campus and in the greater Boise community. Spring: A Time of New Beginnings and (Major) Change

from Jennifer Iuvone, Career Center

As the spring semester kicks off, you are probably expecting to see a lot of students who have just changed their major, or who want to change their major. When a student is changing majors, there is so much to talk to them about that it’s really easy to forget to ask one important question: “Why?”

A few questions exploring the motivating factors behind a student’s choices can go a long way in opening up a dialog that reveals how to best help that student. As you well know, what a student tells you she needs when she comes into your office may be very different from what she really needs. Here are a few examples of things that could be going on behind a major change:
  • A student just switched to a “practical” major because he didn’t think he could get a job with his previous major.
  • A student panicked after realizing the initial major she chose wasn’t for her and hastily selected a new major without researching corresponding career options so as not to “lose time.”
  • A student isn’t sure what he enjoys or what kind of career he wants, so he declared a major that he thought would be easy.
All of these scenarios are good reminders of how a simple “Why?” can change the advising conversation!

RAD HOLD and AAE Transitions

AAE's transition into Boise State's first-year advising and student-support office will include formal responsibility for coordination of Required Advising Hold (RAD) communication and most RAD advising sessions beginning FA16 term.

All first-term Boise State students will be notified of their Required Advising Holds (RADs) on February 1, 2016.  AAE and the academic colleges will use the SP16 RAD process to pilot new approaches to RAD advising and test various RAD-advisor assignments.  Here is a quick overview (by college) of how RADs will be handled this term:
  • COAS: COAS RADs will be coordinated through Center for Advising and Student Success (CASS), which has negotiated individualized approaches with each COAS academic department.
  • COED: COED RADs will continue be managed by Jamie Jensen and Olga Salinas who now work within AAE.
  • COHS: COHS and AAE advising staff will partner to assign RADs based on degree program and students' earned credits.  AAE First-Year Experience liaison: Megan Lindbeck.
  • COBE: COBE and AAE advising staff will partner to assign RADs based on students' earned credits. AAE First-Year Experience liaison: Lauren Rice.
  • COEN: COEN and AAE advising staff will partner to assign RADs based on degree program.  AAE First-Year Experience liaisons: Alizabeth Gaddie and Roxanne Stone.
  • SPS: Amanda Dolfin will coordinate SP16 RAD advising.  AAE and SPS will explore ongoing RAD coordination in preparation for FA16 term.
  • International/Govt-sponsored: AAE advisor, Liz Tutt, will take over coordination of RAD advising for those first-term students who will come to AAE for SP16 RAD appointments.
