Congratulations all December graduates!

Dear NC State Parents & Families,

As we embark on the New Year, January marks a time of both insight and joy. It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the great year that 2015 was and look forward to the new beginnings and exciting opportunities that 2016 has in store.

At NC State, we found no better way to celebrate the end of 2015 than that of our Fall Commencement ceremonies, with 3,600 students having graduated on December 18. This is not only an accomplishment to all of these students but to you, the parents and families who have stood by them through long nights, hard classes, and celebrations. Congratulations to all!

The start of 2016 is an exciting time for Parents & Families Services. On Tuesday, January 5th we welcomed the newest members of the Wolfpack community at our Spring Orientation. With this group of students comes an additional two hundred and eighty parents and family members joining the Parents & Families Association, welcome.

January also marks the announcement and registration launch of our exciting Spring Fling program being held February 13-14, 2016. Registration is now open. In addition to planning your next visit to campus, we have included the Spring Academic Calendar, very Important Dates and upcoming deadlines we want to be sure your student does not miss; specifically the Housing Reapplication process, FAFSA application and Student Blue waiver deadlines. With so much going on to kick-off the New Year we understand it is hard to keep it all straight. We hope the information included is useful in your planning and in the support of your student.

In closing, we hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and look forward to sharing a very happy and successful 2016 with you, your student(s) and your family. It is with your continued support and guidance that we work diligently to help ensure the support and ultimate success of your State student. Please remember that our website is a wealth of information, the HelpLine is available anytime you need it by way of phone (919) 515.2441 or email ncstateparents@ncsu.edu, and parents tell us time and time again how helpful our Conversation Calendar and student blog PACK-TALK is. These are only a few of the supports in place to help keep you, NC State's PACK PARENTS, informed and connected to campus. If you ever have a question, need, or concern that we can assist with, big or small, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Kerri Fowler
Assistant Director

University Housing

Living on campus is not mandatory at NC State. However it is encouraged. Whether your student is near or far, having the experience of a residence hall is one-of-a-kind. Not only does it provide easy access to campus resources, it helps students gain life skills and experiences that are sometimes unexpected yet necessary. Housing Selection for Fall 2016 begins January 13 and ends February 12, 2016.

If you or your student are still on the fence, read the perspective of one of our Parent Allies, a Raleigh native with many living experiences to share.

Here is the breakdown of housing status and reapplication.

January 13 - 15  STAY IN ROOM or APARTMENT
Current residents that want to stay in their current room or apartment.

January 20 & 21  STAY IN BUILDING
Current residents that want a different room in their current residence hall or apartment.

January 25 - 28  GROUP MOVES

SUMMER AT NC STATE

With four sessions to choose from, Summer at NC State offers an incredible opportunity for students to meet their academic requirements to graduate on time and still have time to work or travel. Registration begins March 2016!
  • There are many reasons students would want to spend the summer at NC State:
  • Graduate Earlier – Four years of less (Recent statistics show that 72% of students who graduated in four years took a summer course)
  • Lighten your course load for next year
  • Smaller class size with high faculty engagement
  • Save money – Discounted tuition rates and financial aid could be available
  • Add a second major or minor
  • Build your GPA by focusing on less classes (60% of students increased their GPA in Summer 2015)
  • Take a high demand course that you could not get into during the Fall/Spring terms

2016 Summer Session Dates:

Maymester (3 Week): May 9-27
Summer 1 (5 Week): May 16-June 17
Summer 1 (10 Week): May 16-July 27
Summer 2 (5 Week): June 23-July 27

For more information please visit summer.ncsu.edu

“College is an important investment, but it is expensive. One of the best ways to control the cost of a college education is to graduate on time. We have clear evidence that attending summer school is a good way to keep students on track to on-time graduation.”
 — Dr. Louis Hunt Senior Vice Provost of Enrollment Management and Services and University Registrar

Protect the Pack

In the November edition of Hello, NC State Parents! we issued our first "Protect the Pack" segment regarding how to recognize and respond to email phishing attacks. See it here. Moving forward Parents & Families Services will continue to issue these types of safety messages to help inform and protect the Wolfpack community.

One such story that has been brought to our attention is the Grandparents' Scam. While this is not new or connected to NC State, we want you and your family to be aware. For more information, here is a summary of the scam from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Whether it is on-campus, in the community or essential tips and conversations to have with your student, we hope you find information provided within Protect the Pack helpful.
