VHEDC and City of Vadnais Heights Launch 2016 Business, Retention & Survey Project

New Program will Survey Success and Needs of our Business Community

In partnership with the City of Vadnais Heights, the VHEDC  is excited to announce the implementation of a local economic development program beginning in early 2016. Both organizations will be working closely with the University of Minnesota’s Extension Office on a Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Survey Project.

The upcoming project provides an opportunity to obtain feedback from businesses using a survey tool prepared to identify, among other items, the businesses’ needs and concerns. The visits will occur between mid-February and mid-March in 2016 and are conducted by local business and organizational leaders. The information gathered will be reviewed by a local task force of community leaders who will help formulate future economic development initiatives for the City.

Businesses will be selected for participation in the project with consideration to a variety of factors, including a random selection process. If selected, businesses will be notified in January of their opportunity to participate. All information collected is confidential and only reported in aggregate. Businesses can request to have specific concerns or issues addressed, and
follow ups will be made.

We welcome any business in Vadnais Heights to request a visit and participation in the program.  If your business would like to
interviewed as a part of the BR&E effort, please contact VHEDC Executive Director, Ling Becker.

Thanks to the following people who will be serving in the BR&E Survey Project Task Force: Bob Arvold (Enterprise Minnesota), Wes Beedon (Peoples Bank Midwest), Karyn Berg (Ramsey County Workforce Solutions), Becky Bjorgum (Innovize), Mike Bowen (CBRE), Micheal Cady (Resurgent Consulting/VH Resident), Ed Cailler (VH Planning Commision), Brian Carnes (Premier Bank/VH Planning Commission), Evan Cordes (VH Safety Committee), Marguerite DeFore (Central Bank), Barbara Hall (Cottages of VH), Blake Huffman (Ramsey County Commissioner), Ed Jambor (Lake Area Bank), Megan Livgard (GreaterMSP), Robert Morse (MidCountry Bank), Bill Nelson (Innovative Office Solutions), Larry Raddatz (Century College), Linda Reber (All Medical Personnel), Bruce Sayler (Connexus Energy), Kathi Schaff (MN Chamber), Thomas Voegele (Comcast Business), Grant Weber (North Star Council Boys Scouts of America), Kristine Wehrkamp (White Bear Lake Area Schools).

The Story of Bill by Mike Mady, Director of Human Resources
Bill has worked at the company for 4 years.  When we first became acquainted with Bill, he was living in a halfway house looking for a job.  At a different
time Bill had been a truck driver for a large moving company.  Bill lost his good driving job and family because of a drug addiction.  He spent time in jail.

Needing a job to keep his place at the halfway house, Bill had a contact at the company who asked us to interview him.  We interviewed Bill and offered him a position as a warehouse cleaner for $11/hour.  Bill spent his day with a broom and also emptied refuge containers and cleaned different rooms.

About year after he started working for the company Bill was given a raise to $13/hour.  He told us about his past and expressed a desire to regain his commercial driver’s license.  We encouraged him.  Bill needed to retake his written exam plus a driving test.   After he passed the written exam and received his permit, the company allowed Bill to practice with company drivers until he had the confidence to take the test and get his Class B License.  After Bill passed his driving test, he joined the company driving team as a Class B driver at $16/hour.

Bill is a good driver.  Wanting to return to his former career as a semi driver and the opportunity to make a better wage, Bill began the process to earn a Class A license about a year after he earned his Class B.  After practicing with
several company Class A drivers Bill earned his Class A license.  Moving to a Class A position, Bill’s wage changed to $18/hour.

Bill continues to be a good employee and driver.  He now regularly trains new company drivers and his wage has moved to $20.50/hour.  Life is better for Bill.  He no longer lives in a halfway house and has a good job, making a good living.

J&J Distributing is a family owned distributor and processor of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Founded in 1978, the company has given second opportunities to a number of individuals over the years.
