NLBIF is leaving its founder and host, the University of Amsterdam, and the current Node Manager is heading for new challenges. The English version of this newsletter follows the Dutch section.

Recente Nederlandse data-ontwikkelingen in GBIF:

Recent Dutch data developments in GBIF:

  • The Working Group International Waterbird and Wetland Research (WIWO) is a new member of the NLBIF network. Together with WIWO, NLBIF started a pilot on the sharing of research data from the international reports that WIWO has published in the last decades. The first dataset, on bird observations and bird research from Mongolia, is now available in GBIF
  • RAVON (Reptile, Amphibian and Fish Conservation Netherlands) is sharing its Reptile data, generated under the scope of the Dutch Network Ecological Monitoring (NEM), through GBIF. Read more about this project on the NLBIF website or see the data in the GBIF portal.
  • Floron en Naturalis are the two Dutch organisations that jointly work on the GBIF publication of the historic Dutch vegetation data stored in the so called "Florivon" database (1901-1949). The December 2015 update brings the total number of records up to 900.000, completing the map in GBIF just a little bit more.
  • The Dutch Fungal Biodiversity Centre (CBS-KNAW) has published an updated version of their living collection of fungi, see the fungi data in GBIF
  • "Waarnening.nl" is a very popular Dutch citizen science initiative that has joined the NLBIF network. Their first datasets to share through GBIF are the data from the Great Grey Shrike counts.
  • A very nice "end of the year" NLBIF - Sovon data achievement has been the publication of the records underlying the "Atlas of European Breeding Birds" originating from the European Bird Census Council (EBCC). Please survey this pan-European dataset in GBIF.
All Dutch GBIF datasets are listed on the NLBIF data page, including numbers of records and links to the GBIF portal and respective IPT installations.

New NLBIF developments concerning ICT and data infrastructure:
  • Through the new so called OAI-PMH services of GBIF, metadata of the GBIF datasets can be exchanged more easily. Thanks to this new service, the product of a cooperation between GBIF, NLBIF and the Dutch organisation DANS, all Dutch GBIF datasets are now available in NARCIS, the Dutch National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System. Read more about this achievement in this NLBIF news item or watch the Dutch GBIF metadata directly in NARCIS.
  • The number of installations of the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT) in The Netherlands is steadily growing. The latest addition (9th) is the IPT from RAVON (Reptile, Amphibian and Fish Conservation Netherlands).
  • The most recent version of the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT), in use by most Dutch GBIF dataproviders, is equipped to deal with so called "sample based data". It is now possible to publish research and monitoring data better and more complete in GBIF. Read all about it in this GBIF document.
  • To serve the Dutch organisations providing data to GBIF at a higher level NLBIF has launched some new blogs on, for example, how to find your own data in GBIF and is providing Newsflashes (in Dutch only at this stage) to provide practical and actual data related news, directly to (only) the data providers.

New and running cooperative projects:

State of the art December 2015:

Belgian team developes smart GBIF "data metrics" visualisation extension and wins GBIF Ebbe Nielsen Challenge 2015. All organizations with data in GBIF can now better visualise their data using a browser extension for Google Chrome. Through this extension, statistical features of a dataset, on size, the taxonomic composition or the use of the dataset, can be visualised in an attractive way when visiting the GBIF data portal. For example, the diagram below is a visualisation of the "download" activities of the Dutch National Vegetation Database in GBIF. More about this new service, the team that developed this extension and the GBIF price they have received, in this NLBIF news release or the GBIF Newsroom.

GBIF asks for your comments and additions to the draft document "Best Practice Guide for Data Gap Analysis for Biodiversity Stakeholders". To what extent biodiversity data in GBIF are suitable for answering scientific hypotheses or supporting (international) nature and biodiversity policy is determined by the completeness of the data. The detection and mapping of deficiencies in the data, the so called "Data Gaps", is therefore crucial. There are different types of "Data Gap Analysis" inventoried, all with their advantages and disadvantages, and GBIF now seeks experts to share their knowledge on this subject and provide comments on the draft document on Data Gap Analysis. On this GBIF page the draft document can be downloaded and instructions are provided on how to provide your input. Take care, reactions can be submitted up to February 1, 2016.
