High Sheriff of Hampshire Announces Launch of Community Awards

Lady Louisa Portal, High Sheriff of Hampshire and District President of Basingstoke West Scouts, has announced a new set of Community Awards, to recognise public servants, individual volunteers or community groups based in Hampshire, who are making a significant contribution to their communities. The focus of these awards will be on public servants, individuals or groups working on law and order related projects, with a particular emphasis on those that enhance safety and cohesion in our communities. The deadline for nominations is 26th January 2016. For more details, visit http://www.hantscf.org.uk/news/press-releases/high-sheriff-of-hampshire-announces-launch-of-community-awards.aspx
Reminder - Our brands Refreshed
To coincide with the refreshed programme, a new edition of the brand guidelines was published in 2015 providing advice on the main Scout brand, the fleur de lis (arrowhead) and the five youth sections. In addition to showing the various logo options and colour palette, you will also find information on our strategic aims, values, tone of voice, illustration, video and social media. There is now more emphasis on an integrated family of brands, with more obvious links to the fleur de lis and emphasising the continuity and progression in the 6-25 Programme.

A range of resources for the revised brands is available on the Scout Print Centre.  The corporate ‘Scouts Be Prepared’ single colour logo for Scouting and Serif Black font remain in use.

Census – for Secretaries
Scout HQ sent the access codes to District Secretaries just before Christmas, the email message contained the access details to be cascaded to Groups for their completion of the Census.
Census day is 31st January and, in order to achieve the HQ deadline for the discount, we are asking for completion of the data entry by 21st February.
For those who have not tackled the Census before we have written a quick guide which is at www.hampshirescouting.org.uk/census2016 .

Gone Home
Just to let  you know that Mike's funeral will be held on Wednesday 6th January 2016 in St Mary's Parish Church, Old Basing at 1.30 p.m.  Family flowers only - donations if wished to Royal National Lifeboat Institution.  We are in the process of setting up a 'just giving' page and will provide an e-link in due course but cheques may also be sent to the funeral director Jonathan Williams, 35-41 Essex Road, Basingstoke RG21 7TB or donations placed in a collection box in the church.  (Mike's family hailed from East Anglia.  Many of his family were fisherfolk in previous generations and some of his family were lost at sea generations back.)

In accordance with Mike's wishes, it will be a fairly traditional service with a Scouting flavour and I have asked Andy Cullen to set up a Scout guard of honour to escort Mike's coffin into the church.  It follows that uniform is welcome or dress as you will.  Be colourful please.

The family will personally greet people as they arrive for the service and will ask everyone for their help in creating a 'memory chest' of Mike by writing down their own personal memories of him and how he touched their lives on a amall card which is being created by Fiona (Philip's wife).  She will also create a service sheet when she and Philip return to the UK on New Year's Eve having attended a family wedding in Margate near Durban and had a holiday in Cape Town area of S. Africa.

It was also Mike's expressed wish that he be waved goodbye from the church and that no-one (not even his family) go with him to the crematorium for committal.  Mike's coffin will therefore leave the church to the lustily sung strains of 'Riding along on the crest of a Wave' (with actions!) and people can then assemble at the roadside to fulfil his wish to wave him goodbye as he makes his final journey and maybe raise a cheer.

Ian Harrison has kindly agreed to play the organ for the service and a long-standing friend of the family Rev Rachel Hartland (who is a member of the ministry of St. Mary's) will conduct the service.

There will be a reception for Mike after the funeral in the village (we are awaiting confirmation from The Bolton as I write)  The family plan to walk there after the service and will talk as they walk and stay at the reception to speak to as many people as possible.  Please join us.

His sons,  (Philip, Andrew and David) and I and the wider family have been overwhelmed with the number of  cards, callers, flowers and personal letters of appreciation and condolence we have received in the days since his death.  That so many people have found time and concern at such a busy time of the year is amazing and it is humbling to realise just how much he touched so many peoples lives.

Thank you and God bless you all.

Please promulgate this information as you feel fit.

Beryl, Philip, Andrew, David, Susan, Fiona, Samantha and Christoper Mullender
