Here They Are ... 2015 Wins in Scott County!

Take a look at the list below!  Over $294M invested, over 1,397 new full time jobs created, over 830 new part time jobs created, over 294 jobs retained, and over 135 relocated jobs. 2015 was a great year for Scott County and all of our communities!

At the First Stop Shop we try hard to have a handle on the new businesses and expansions in each of our communities, but many times when we are not directly involved in the projects we rely on the information we get from each city. The list below is not a comprehensive list of every single business win in the county, but is comprised of projects we worked on in 2015 as well as projects that were added to the list by each of our communities.

Spread the Word - SBIR/STTR Workshop being held in Prior Lake Feb. 10!

What is SBIR/STTR you may ask?  Here is some information on the two programs, followed by information on the workshop in Prior Lake and button to register below.

The SBIR Program:  The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. By including qualified small businesses in the nation's R&D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.

The SBIR Program is structured in three phases:
  • Phase I. The objective of Phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of the proposed R/R&D efforts and to determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization prior to providing further Federal support in Phase II. SBIR Phase I awards normally do not exceed $150,000 total costs for 6 months.
  • Phase II. The objective of Phase II is to continue the R/R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II. Only Phase I awardees are eligible for a Phase II award. SBIR Phase II awards normally do not exceed $1,000,000 total costs for 2 years.
  • Phase III. The objective of Phase III, where appropriate, is for the small business to pursue commercialization objectives resulting from the Phase I/II R/R&D activities. The SBIR program does not fund Phase III. Some Federal agencies, Phase III may involve follow-on non-SBIR funded R&D or production contracts for products, processes or services intended for use by the U.S. Government.

The STTR Program:  The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) is another program that expands funding opportunities in the federal innovation research and development (R&D) arena. Central to the program is expansion of the public/private sector partnership to include the joint venture opportunities for small businesses and nonprofit research institutions. The unique feature of the STTR program is the requirement for the small business to formally collaborate with a research institution in Phase I and Phase II. STTR's most important role is to bridge the gap between performance of basic science and commercialization of resulting innovations.

The STTR Program is structured in three phases:
  • Phase I. The objective of Phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of the proposed R/R&D efforts and to determine the quality of performance of the small businesses prior to providing further Federal support in Phase II. STTR Phase I awards normally do not exceed $150,000 total costs for 1 year.
  • Phase II. The objective of Phase II is to continue the R/R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the Phase II project proposed. Only Phase I awardees are eligible for a Phase II award. STTR Phase II awards normally do not exceed $1,000,000 total costs for 2 years.
  • Phase III. The objective of Phase III, where appropriate, is for the small business to pursue commercialization objectives resulting from the Phase I/II R/R&D activities. The STTR program does not fund Phase III. In some Federal agencies, Phase III may involve follow-on non-STTR funded R&D or production contracts for products, processes or services intended for use by the U.S. Government.

2016 Scott County CDA - Economic Development Incentive Grants

The Information and Application Guide for the 2016 round of EDI Grants from the CDA was distributed to the cities and Scott County on December 30. The CDA has $340,000 available to help projects move forward that will promote economic development throughout Scott County. Deadline for application is January 29, 2016!

The program is similar to the last two years with two different categories to apply under:

(1) Corridor Readiness - which are projects intended to maximize development and/or redevelopment opportunities and the investment of capital within the top ten commercial corridors as established by the SCALE Transportation and Economic Development Committee. The match will remain 2:1 ($2 of CDA money to each $1 of match money).

(2) Technical Assistance - which are projects that will enhance economic development activities with the goal of achieving new job creation in Scott County. The match will remain 1:1 ($1 of CDA money to each $1 of match money).

Please keep in mind, the primary goals of these grants have been (1) to encourage projects that move land toward being shovel ready and redevelopment projects forward, setting the stage and opening up opportunities for new business in Scott County, and (2) moving projects forward that otherwise probably wouldn’t move forward without the grant funding.

The review committee will review applications and plan to announce awards in February.
