Save the Date for the Stupka Symposium

The Stupka planning committee is pleased to announce the upcoming 11th Annual Stupka Symposium, scheduled for April 7, 2016.  This is an event designed to encourage the interaction between students and faculty over the topics of research in biological and chemical sciences.
  • The POSTER SUBMISSION deadline is March 21
  • FREE REGISTRATION opens February 1
The Stupka Symposium is entirely organized and run by the undergraduate students in the Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology areas of study.  This event was the inspiration of Rob Stupka, an undergraduate student majoring in biochemistry at Iowa State.  Rob tragically lost his life in the fall of 2005 before he was able to see the first symposium and the result of his work.  The symposium was dedicated to Rob and this annual event now bears his name in tribute.  For more information, see https://stupka.las.iastate.edu/.
Upper-Division Students: Write Better Personal Statements!

Got a scholarship possibility? Applying to an REU?  If you are getting ready to apply for summer research programs, internships or scholarships, you may want to get some pointers at the next SKILLZ workshop, Writing Personal Statements.  SKILLZ sessions were launched last year – workshops on topics Honors students told us they wanted to have. SKILLZ sessions are offered on a variety of topics and are open only to UHP members.

The personal statements workshop has two meetings: the first is about the components of personal statements and the second is used to practice editing techniques on a draft you’ll written in the week between. You need to attend both meetings.  The workshops will be held:
January 21 & 28 (both Thursdays)
                                                4:10 – 5:00 p.m.
                                                1151 Jischke
If you’re a UHP member and want to participate in Writing Personal Statements, send an e-mail to Dana Schumacher, dschumac@iastate.edu, ASAP.  Enrollment is limited to 20.
