Hitting the ground running in 2016
We've made a simple resolution this year: we want 2016 to be our best year yet. As part of that, we're very excited to partner with several organizations to offer trainings and workshops in inclusive arts state-wide this year. Mental Health First Aid
Learn how to recognize and offer help to a visitor or patron who is showing signs of a mental illness. Staff from Alliance Behavioral Healthcare will share a five 5-step action plan and resources to connect him/her to care.
The workshop will be held at CAM Raleigh on Monday, January 11, from 12:00-1:30 PM.

Accessibility 101

Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County - Fayetteville, NC
Arts Access is pleased to partner with the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County to offer a workshop that will enable cultural organizations to better include people with disabilities.
This workshop will cater to administrators, board members, volunteers, ushers, docents, box office staff, and additional front-of-house staff at cultural arts organizations.
Participants will learn
- Overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it impacts arts organizations
- Common accommodations for customers with disabilities and where to find them
- Sensitivity and disability etiquette in communicating with and assisting someone
- Emergency procedures and safety issues
- Steps for writing your organization's ADA plan

Fayetteville Inclusive Arts Meeting
Monday February 1st, 7:00-8:30pm
Join Arts Access and the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County as they host a community meeting at the Arts Council for anyone interested in arts and disability issues in the Fayetteville area. This will be a great chance to network and socialize for those that care about inclusive arts! The event is free, but we ask that you call 919.833.9919 or email Lee to register. Arts for All
Including School-Age Children with Disabilities in Arts Education
Arts Access, Inc.presents a one-day workshop for teaching artists, arts educators, and general education classroom teachers led by Jaehn Clare on strategies for including children of all abilities in arts education activities.
Topics include:
- Principles of Universal Design for Learning and how to apply them
- Activity modification and inclusion practices for all art forms
- Breakout Sessions: strategies by arts discipline and a variety of disabilities
When: Saturday, February 6th 10:00am-5:00pm
Where: Emerge Gallery (Home of the Pitt County Arts Council)

VSA International Young Soloists Award Program
A Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program
Deadline for entries: February 10, 2016
Each year, outstanding young musicians with disabilities, ages 14-25, are recognized by the VSA International Young Soloists Competition. The Kennedy Center selects up to four winners from around the world. Applicants can apply as an instrumental or vocal soloist, or as ensembles. The competition is open to all genres. Selected musicians win a $2,500 prize, professional development activities, and the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Congrats to Joan!
Arts Access board member Joan M. Ballard was selected as the Woman's Club of Raleigh's featured artist for the month of January. Her work will be on display all month at the Woman's Club, so be sure to stop by and take a look.
Joan is a member of the Visual Art Exchange and a volunteer Artist with BEST Raleigh. Her work has been featured in shows at Hermitage Museum, Norfolk, VA; Mercury Studios, Durham; The Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh; Bryn Mawr Hospital, Philadelphia, PA; Art After Dark, Fuquay-Varina, and various other locations throughout the Raleigh-Durham area.
An artist with a disability, Joan has been a phenomenal advocate for Arts Access and inclusive arts. Congratulations, Joan, on your latest achievement!
