2016 edition launched today


(Lisbon, 07.01.16) The University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE–IUL) and the EMCDDA will be joining forces again in June 2016 to hold the fifth European drugs summer school (EDSS) on ‘Illicit drugs in Europe: demand, supply and public policies’, which is also supported by the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Registration opens today, 7 January. Candidates who enrol in the first phase (before 1 March) get a reduction of 100 EUR (total fee 700 EUR). The programme fee includes tuition, canteen vouchers and a welcome reception. Scholarships are available for eligible students.

The EDSS will take place in Lisbon from 27 June to 8 July. During the two-week programme, renowned keynote speakers, EMCDDA scientific experts, university professors and policymakers will give participants the information they need in order to meet the complex policy challenges occurring in this field. Special focus of this edition will be the UN General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS).

Students

The target audiences for the EDSS are university students, researchers, professionals and administrators interested in working on drugs issues. The 2015 edition of the summer school brought to Lisbon a record 38 academics and professionals from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, four of whom received scholarships from ISCTE–IUL and NIDA.

Programme

Week 1 of the EDSS focuses on ‘Drug policies and the production of evidence’ with lectures on: UNGASS 2016; evidence in harm reduction; drug markets in Europe; detecting new drugs; and prevention. This session will also focus on the EMCDDA’s epidemiological indicators and their use in informing drug policy. Week 2 is dedicated to ‘Policymaking for drug-related issues’, including lectures on: drug policies; the EU drug strategy; drug laws and public expenditure; and monitoring supply reduction and drug enforcement activity. It will conclude with an analysis of the link between evidence and decision-making.

Scholarships

Scholarships will be awarded to several eligible students (50 % fee reduction). Six ECTS credits will be given for the courses and students can transfer credits to other European universities using the ECTS system.
