BNS Updates

Welcome to 2016!

Another season of (warm riding) has passed, another Christmas Holiday season is over, and we are heading into the depths of winter (albeit, with brighter days ahead). It has been a busy year for Bicycle Nova Scotia, and for many of the people working to make Nova Scotia a better place to ride a bicycle.

A few highlights:
  • First section of the Blue Route opens up in Pictou County. After many years of hard work, planning, and strategic partnerships, the Blue Route is starting to take shape.
  • Women on Wheels program is a great success, getting more seniors on their bicycles in a supportive and encouraging environment.
  • Bicycle Nova Scotia gets a new website, including a calendar of events showing what is happening all around the province.
  • An amazing race season with more people than ever getting out and competing around the province. Cyclocross races were incredibly popular this year with more and more people getting engaged in the sport.
  • BNS had a strategic planning session, helping us to plan for what the organization will look like and engage in during the coming years. (More to come on this soon.)
  • Another exciting Nova Scotia Bike Summit which took place in Kings County.
It's also important to remember that 2015 came with its challenges. There were a number of incidents where bicyclists felt uncomfortable on the road due to a few aggressive individuals. There were also a number of accidents and, sadly, even loss of life.

Let's take this opportunity to remember the last year, with all of its triumphs and challenges, and prepare for a coming year of good riding, strong community, and safe roads.

We look forward to joining you for the ride.

Introducing Halifax’s new Bike-Friendly Certification program

The Cities & Environment Unit (CEU), in partnership with Halifax SmartTrip and Rarebird Brand Strategy & Design, has launched a Bike-Friendly Certification program.

Demonstrate your support for a vital and growing constituency of occasional and daily cyclists looking for bike-friendly options. Through Bike-Friendly Certification, your business or organization will stand out in the eyes of potential employees, clients, and customers as a leader in growing a cycling-supportive city.

Businesses, schools, and other organizations that participate in the program will receive a level of certification based on their level of support for cycling as a viable transportation choice for their staff, tenants, clients, customers, or students.

To learn if Bike-Friendly Certification is right for your organization please visit: http://halifax.ca/smarttrip/cycle/Bike-FriendlyCertification.php

We're excited to work with you in 2016 to celebrate your support for cycling!

Making Tracks Partnership Request

This year already, together we trained over 2500 children and youth in Making Tracks active transportation safety and skills. We also provided program leader training (train-the-trainer) for more than 200 adults and older youth. Since 2008, we have delivered training to more than 10,000 children and youth and 700 adults and older youth. This success would not have been possible without direct community partnerships with folks like you including providing facilities for training sessions, funds to subsidize trainer fees, outreach to your local partners, volunteers and community members, and providing reporting data for our programs.

I want to sincerely thank you all for all of your hard work and support. An example of our success last year is that we trained recreation staff with the Towns of Kentville and Wolfville, CBRM and Halifax to deliver Making Tracks programs as part of their summer programming. The Halifax Try-A-Ride program was one of our particularly unique partnerships in that we lent our expertise and support to build an adapted Making Tracks curriculum as well as provide leader training for their staff. This program engaged 1000 children and youth in experiences to safely wheel in various ways (http://www.halifax.ca/rec/Try-A-Ride.php).

We’d like to expand on successes like these again this year. With spring programs being planned already I wanted to ask for your support again this coming year. As you make your plans over the coming year I hope that you’ll consider hosting/supporting any of the Making Tracks programs for your schools, recreation programs, clubs, etc. For more information on Making Tracks program information, please visit: http://saferoutesns.ca/programs/making-tracks
