Please Pick.Click.Give. when filing your PFD

The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period opens on Friday, Jan. 1, and for the third year you can use the Pick.Click.Give. charitable contribution program to donate to the Sitka Local Foods Network.

The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period runs from Jan. 1 through March 31, but you can still go back into your application through Aug. 31 to update your Pick.Click.Give. donations. Last year we had 64 people pledge to donate $3,350 to the Sitka Local Foods Network, and this year we'd love to see 75 donors for $4,000. There are more than 500 charities in Alaska participating in Pick.Click.Give., including 24 in Sitka, and it's a great program to share the wealth. Speaking of donations, some of you may be looking for a last-minute donation for your 2015 income tax. Others of you may not qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend program. In either case, our inaugural #GivingTuesday fundraiser has been extended until Dec. 31. You can learn more about the fundraiser by clicking this link, and you can donate using our secure online site for Giving Tuesday.

Your support helps us meet our mission of increasing the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. We appreciate your contributions to Sitka's food security. Thanks for your support.

Sitka Local Foods Network annual meeting is Jan. 30

The Sitka Local Foods Network annual meeting and potluck dinner is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall (408 Marine Street, parking off Spruce Street).

This even is open to the public, just bring a dish to share with others (local food is preferred, but not required). This event features the usual introduction of new board members (Edith Johnson, Wendy Lawrence and Chris Todd), confirmation of the election of officers, a recap of the past year and preview of the upcoming year. In addition, this year we will hold a small fundraising auction of local-food-related items. To learn more, click this link.

Garden mentor program recruiting new families for 2015-16

The Sitka Local Foods Network education committee is still recruiting new families for the 2015-16 garden mentoring program. The program is for first-time gardeners who need coaching on how to grow their own food in Sitka.

Those families who join the program will learn how to grow lettuce, kale, rhubarb and potatoes during their first year in the program. There also is an option for a second year, when the families learn how to grow carrots, green onions, chard and peas, which are a little bit more difficult to grow in Sitka. We hope to add up to three new families each year. To learn more about how to apply, click this link.

In addition to recruiting new families for our garden mentor program, watch our website for upcoming garden education offerings from the Sitka Local Foods Network and cooking classes from the Sitka Kitch. There should be some new announcements in early January.
