Seed Fund Studentships

SINAPSE has awarded funding for five PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The first studentship announced is at the University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and industry partner IXICO, for a project on prediction models of dementia risk (application deadline: 27th February 2016). UK PET Chemistry meeting

SINAPSE is proud to host the 2016 UK PET Chemistry meeting on the 4th May in Edinburgh. The 1-day event will feature keynote presentations from Prof David Newby (University of Edinburgh) and Prof Paul Matthews (Imperial College London). The deadline for abstract submission is 14th March 2016. More details...

Runner-up entry from SINAPSE in IOP video competition

Last month's newsletter featured the winning entry from SINAPSE in the International Year of Light video competition held by the Institute of Physics (IOP) in Scotland. In the runner-up entry, PhD student Tim Morgan explains how light is used in his PET imaging research to help study what's going wrong in multiple sclerosis. More details (and video!)...

JPND funding call

The EU Joint Programme - Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND) has announced a funding call for working groups to bring forward novel approaches to enhance the use of brain imaging for neurodegenerative disease research. Submission deadline:10th March 2016. More details...

Image of the Month: MRI incidental findings

Our February Image of the Month, courtesy of Prof Joanna Wardlaw, shows multiple lesions in axial FLAIR (left) and T2 (right) brain MRI consistent with multiple sclerosis discovered as incidental findings in a young health technologist, who benefited from early treatment.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Dr Jonathan Weir-McCall

Jonathan Weir-McCall is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow and Clinical Lecturer in Clinical Radiology in Ninewells Hospital Dundee. Following graduating in 2007 from the University of Aberdeen, he spent 4 years in London where he completed his junior doctor years and entered Radiology training in Guy’s and St Thomas’. In 2009 he took up a clinical lecturer post in Ninewells Hospital with a major research interest in cardiovascular imaging. His main research interest has been in the development of clinical cardiac imaging with a particular interest in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to better understand cardiac function in both health and in disease. His current focus is on the effects of COPD on systemic and pulmonary arterial stiffening and their repercussions on left and right ventricular haemodynamics and remodeling in order to better understand the excess cardiovascular mortality experienced by this cohort.
