January 2016 Edition

This month our featured Solutions are:
2015 registrant
SeaChange Group, and 2015 BIG Pitch registrant Mbissa Energy Systems.
Mbissa Energy Systems was a BIG Pitch Competition registrant in 2015 with the solution Mbissa Wind Energy. The startup develops, deploys, and provides training in locally sustainable energy technology, for a sustainable off-grid electrical infrastructure in rural Africa.

Startup founder Caleb Grove is a graduate of University of New Brunswick in Canada. In the currently active pilot project, solar panels supplement locally manufactured wind turbines to provide power to a community center and health clinic in Mbissa, in the region of Bambalang, Cameroon. This consistent power also provides a charging station that the surrounding community can access. People can use the charging station for a small fee to charge cell phones, radios and batteries which they can then take home.

When Mbissa Wind Energy is installing the systems, the turbines are partially subsidized by raised funding (half the costs) and the remaining costs are paid for by affected communities. Local business, however, will fully recoup the costs of installations along with a profit before selling electricity for the local going rate.

This model of electricity access is now being tested in three additional compounds, and technical training of community members is ongoing. Caleb says “The full payback time for a system is about 7 months, so I'm hoping to validate the model in about a year's time. The training has been going well and the foundation is there for work sometime early 2016!”

The ultimate goal is for locals to be trained to maintain the system on an ongoing basis. By empowering people with knowledge and tools to manage their energy access, Mbissa Wind Energy contributes towards breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Africa. The startup was recently featured in the University of New Brunswick Newsroom blog.

SeaChange Group was an Ocean Exchange Solutions Inspiring Action contest registrant in 2015. Their solution, Eco-Hybrid Fuel, is a renewable low to very low-emission fuel for diesel engine markets.

Ocean and waterway vessels use the highest volumes of diesel fuels, specifically high emission (dirty) fuels. In the US, the EPA estimates these emissions contribute to more than 14,000 deaths and many more health issues each year. Eco-Hybrid Fuel offers an alternative.

Geoff Lamdin of SeaChange recently updated Ocean Exchange on their work on Eco-Hybrid Fuel. The past year has seen a move from the lab to sea trials, and tests results for the fuel are positive. Market changes have led to additional opportunities for SeaChange to partner with entities in the biodiesel realm, and further develop the biofuel version of Eco-Hybrid Fuel, called Bio-EHF.

Bio-EHF is a blend of glycerol and primarily biodiesel rather than petroleum diesel. Bio-EHF represents a key opportunity to bring to market a fuel that is petroleum free. Bio-EHF can help meet the increasing demand to move toward renewable energy sources.

Biofuels are fully renewable, and represent value and market benefits for biodiesel producers. Their use supports air emission reductions for end users over petroleum or biodiesel/petroleum blends, and they are a transparent substitute for petroleum diesel used in markets such as heating, marine, large off-road and industrial equipment, locomotives, power plants and others.

SeaChange is currently working on blend development of the biofuel, and small engine testing. Additionally, they are collaborating with the Maine Maritime Academy’s METEL (Marine Engine Testing and Emissions Lab) research and testing laboratory under a US Department of Transportation research grant.
