4P Foods Weekly Harvest

What to expect in your bag...

EGG-UCATION
Whiffletree Farm was recently featured in The Piedmont Virginian Magazine for their sustainable practices of raising happy, pastured chickens. A little egg-ducation on all those labels you find on egg cartons in grocery stores, courtesy of the Lexicon of Sustainability

Cage free: Chickens that are not kept in cages. This means chickens are still confined to a barn with limited or no access to outside. The term “barn-roaming” more accurately describes this principle.

Free range: Outside the United States this term refers to a method of farming where the animals are allowed to roam freely rather than being contained in any manner. In the United States, USDA regulations apply only to poultry and indicate solely that the animal has been allowed access to the outside. These regulations do not specify the quality or size of the outside range nor the duration of time the animal must be allowed access to this space.

Pasture raised or “pastured”: Animals, like Whiffletree’s chickens, that have been raised on pasture with access to shelter, allowing them to be as close to nature as possible. Thanks for voting with your fork and supporting happy chickens and delicious eggs!

FRUITCYCLE APPLE CHIPS
This week in your bags you'll find cinnamon apple chips from Fruitcycle, a Washington DC based social enterprise that makes delicious, healthy, locally sourced snacks. They focus on using produce that would otherwise go to waste, and provide jobs for women who have been formerly incarcerated, homeless, or are otherwise disadvantaged. Here at 4PFoods we are constantly thinking about the huge amount of food waste created while 1 in 6 Americans go hungry, and support Fruitcycle's mission wholeheartedly. To top all that, Fruitcycle's apple chips are tasty and healthy with no fat, added sugars, or artificial ingredients. And they’re gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free too.

TURMERIC!
We are very excited to be getting turmeric for the first time ever! Turmeric has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger, and while it is best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry, it also gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color. Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh. Turmeric has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory, and was traditionally called "Indian saffron." Check out Bon Appetit magazine's roundup of their best turmeric recipes. Turmeric goes great in making Indian-inspired curries, and can also be used in making tea. One of our favorite recipes is a Turmeric Tahini dressing that can be used to dress up everything from salad to grain bowls.

OFFICE/APARTMENT NEWSLETTERS
Does your office or apartment building have a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly newsletter? We would love to be featured in it (perhaps along with a fun seasonal recipe) to inspire even more people to eat yummy local food, easily. Shoot an email to Bonnie at bonnie@4pfoods.com so she can get the word out, and spread the peas and love.

Thanks for all your support.

A Note from 4P Foods:

Don't forget!!  Cutoff times to skip a bag: Sunday at midnight for Wednesday deliveries, Monday at midnight for Thursday deliveries, and Tuesday at midnight for Friday deliveries.

If you have a produce share AND a protein/dairy share and need to skip a given week, be sure to skip ALL of them when logged into your account page.  Otherwise, the system is designed so you can skip one or the other in a given week.
If you ever get a bruised apple or "sad" greens or anything along those lines - TELL US! It happens in the world of produce, and we need that kind of feedback to tell our farmers if something is wrong, and get you a discount/credit if needed.  That's what we're here for!
Wanting to learn a little more about the best ways to prepare your Grassfed meat each week? Jesse from Wiffletree Farm suggests these two cookbooks for those learning their way around: The Grassfed Gourmet and Long Way on a Little: An Earth Lover's Companion for Enjoying Meat, Pinching Pennies and Living Deliciously.
Peas and love,
