This month's neighborhood updates
Our February newsletter is hot on the heels of our January installment. We're not featuring a photo this month because there are quite a few items of interest to pack in — not to mention plenty of smiling faces awaiting you at the end!

There's a Traffic-Calming Workshop tonight (February 3) starting at 5:30pm at the West Central Community Center. If you know of a trouble spot—a dangerous pedestrian crossing, for instance, or a street where drivers routinely ignore the speed limit—this is the place to go to learn what can be done and exactly how to do it. In March, neighborhood councils across Spokane will be taking these traffic-calming proposals and recommending the top ones to the City for consideration.

Speaking of which: The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council is back in full swing after its customary January hiatus. It meets one week from now on Wednesday, February 10 from 6 to 7:30pm at the Corbin Senior Center. Anyone with an interest in what's happening around the neighborhood is invited to attend.

At this month's meeting, Patrick Striker will be talking about crime prevention and what the future holds for Spokane COPS. And Jonathan Mallahan, the City's Community and Neighborhood Services Division Director, will address what the recent reorganization at City Hall means for neighborhoods like ours. We met the initial announcement with some skepticism, but we've since heard some sound reasoning for the benefits of the reshuffle.

The EGNC meeting will also cover what we've learned over the past two months about the new Neighborhood Notification process, discuss priorities for 2016, and start putting things in place for events like the Concerts in the Park and the Emerson-Garfield Farmers' Market.

On that last note, the farmers' market is still looking for volunteers to help out before and during the upcoming market season. (Even KXLY was kind enough to help spread the word!) You don't need any particular skills or experience – just a spare hour or two and a desire to be a part of this community-oriented market. If you're thinking about stepping up, now is the time to get in touch. Without additional volunteers, the market simply can't happen.

Before we close, we'd like to remind you that Emerson-Garfield has dedicated representatives on several committees, advisory panels, and other groups throughout Spokane. They serve as our neighborhood voice at the city level. If you'd like to find out more or speak your mind about a particular issue, we encourage you to reach out to the appropriate rep – so please take some time to meet them below!
