New Staff, New Stuff!

Happy Spring 2016!  We hope that your semester is off to a great (if snowy) start.  As you may know, we welcomed several new staff to the High Library last fall.
Click here to "Meet the High Library Staff".
We also began to offer a few new resources and services.  Read on to learn more!

iPads and Swivl Available for Checkout

Have you heard that the library now offers iPads and a Swivl for three-day loans?  Stop by the circulation desk to check out either of these devices.  (What's a Swivl?  It's a robotic tool that allows you to record and save your presentations.  Simply place your smartphone in the Swivl base and hold the Swivl lanyard in your hand.  The Swivl will follow your movements as you deliver your lecture.  Use the Swivl to practice for your upcoming class presentations!  ITS also recommends this helpful tool, so you'll find additional details in the Knowledgebase.)

Research Collection Upgrades

  • Academic Search Complete is a great place to start your research, as the database provides access to more than 13,000 journals from all disciplines.  Full-text articles are available from more than 7,000 peer-reviewed publications, with content dating back to the late 1800s.
  • Books at JSTOR offers more than 35,000 e-books from scholarly publishers.  Subject areas include: business; economics; education; film studies; history; language; law; literature; music; philosophy; plants; political science; religion; science and technology; sociology; and sustainability.  Now you can use JSTOR to search for book chapters, journal articles, and primary sources simultaneously!
  • SAGE Premier provides access to more than 800 peer-reviewed journals from all disciplines.  If you're on campus, visit SAGE's website to search the entire Premier collection; or use the Journal Finder to access specific titles from any on- or off-campus location.

World War II Materials in the Hess Archives

The Hess Archives and Special Collections recently accepted the letters, photographs, and memorabilia that Etown athletes shared with former coach and athletic director Ira R. Herr during the World War II era.  (The athletes wrote candidly about their experiences as soldiers.)  Coach Herr's daughter, Lois K. Herr '62, donated the collection after publishing many of the letters in Dear Coach: Letters Home from World War II.  Former President Theodore Long offered this review of the book in 2009: "Dear Coach is a touching portrait of the deep impact great coaches have on student athletes, reflected through the prism of their experience at war.  These soldiers' letters to Coach Herr are poignant reminders of how great issues of war and peace shape the lives of young men and women, even today."
In addition to the "Dear Coach" collection, the "H. Willard Good Papers" provide another glimpse of daily life during the WWII era.  Student assistant Erin Krause '16 just processed the letters that Mr. Good, a local member of the Church of the Brethren, sent and received during his time as a conscientious objector at a Civilian Public Service camp.  Be sure to read Erin's blog post for more information about this unique collection.
