Join Students in Promoting Peace and Tolerance in Our Community on January 19!
We are excited to announce that SLED has been awarded Community Benefit Grant from
Kaiser Permanente that will support our efforts to bring the Season of Service, Period of Peace program to a broader audience in our community.
The community is invited to participate in the kick-off of the 2016 Season of Service by joining the Black Student Union’s annual “Martin Luther King March” on Tuesday, January 19. The march will begin at 3:30 pm at San Leandro High School (2200 Bancroft Ave) and arrive at City Hall (835 E. 14th Street) approximately one hour later. At City Hall there will be a short student speaker program. Bring your peace signs and join San Leandro students in promoting peace and tolerance in our community!
Season of Service, Period of Peace (SOSPOP) is a ten-week period beginning on Martin Luther King Day (January 18) and concluding on Cesar Chaves Day (March 31). Over the course of those 10 weeks, classes and student clubs at San Leandro High School, John Muir and Bancroft Middle Schools, and Jefferson Elementary, will be implementing projects that help promote a culture of non-violence and peace on their campuses. These projects vary from offering professional development for teachers on gender identity (Club Rainbow 2015) to providing care kits for homeless people (Social Advocacy Club 2015), to constructing a “We All Sit Together” bench (Woodshop, 2015).

Students Submit Videos for Inaugural SLED SHORTIES Film Festival
The San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED) will be hosting its inaugural county-wide high school film festival on February 4 and 5 at the San Leandro Performing Arts Center. The SLED SHORTIES Film Festival was created to give film and media students in Alameda County an opportunity to display their talents and creativity.
SLED student interns designed and created a website, posters, and garnered attention among visual and performing arts teachers across Alameda County. Students have submitted entries in five categories: Public Service Announcement (PSA), Animation, Documentary, Narrative, and a Challenge. The forty-five entries represent JFK (Fremont), Oakland, Piedmont, Tennyson, and San Leandro high schools as well as entries from Camp Reel Stories in Oakland.
Category winners will receive a trophy designed by a student from the San Leandro Academy of Multimedia (SLAM) and a cash prize.
There will a FREE screening of all submitted films on Thursday, February 4th at 7pm. Winners will be presented at the First Annual Shortie Award event on Friday, February 5th, at 7pm. Both events will be held at the Performing Arts Center, 2250 Bancroft Ave., located on the San Leandro High School campus.
Online tickets for the Shortie Award event are $10 for adults and $7 for students with id. Tickets sold at the door are $15 for adults and $10 for students. To purchase tickets or for more information, please visit www.sledshorties.com. We hope to see you there!
