Insider Travel News

We may be in the heart of winter, but spring is around the corner. It's a good idea to start planning your North Carolina spring and summer trips right now to get the best availability.

Here are a few ideas curated by our founder, Leigh Powell Hines. And you can always look to Visit NC for expanded ideas.

Leigh recently checked into the Holiday Inn Resort in Wrightsville Beach, N.C for a quick winter getaway. Rates in the winter are well below $200 per night. With an indoor pool, the fun is year-round at this full-service resort.

Wrightsville Beach is home to a beautiful coastline and the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History
, which preserves the 100-year history of the island. One exhibit shows what the beach looked like in the early 1900s with a to-scale model including the old trolley system. The “Beach Car” trolley was an important aspect of the area because it extended from downtown Wilmington to the barrier island, making it a vacation destination for the last century. Today, as you stroll down Lumina Avenue, keep an eye out for the seven plaques that show the old trolley stops.

We also dined at the Oceanic, the new Poe's tavern, and we look forward to stopping in South Beach Grill when we visit again. When in this area, you must visit the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. Now is a good time because it may get a little muggy in the summer. Plan for some steep steps, and narrow corridors. It may be difficult for children under the age of 5.

Plan your trip today to Wilmington, N.C. and its island beaches.

Italian Romance in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Cozy up in the beautiful Siena Hotel, part of the Marriott Autograph Collection Hotels, for a splendid Italian getaway. Under the culinary leadership of Teddy Diggs, the Il Palio, is one of the best Italian restaurants in North Carolina. The hotel is conveniently located to downtown Chapel Hill and is also close to Southern Season, North Carolina's premiere gourmet store. You will feel as if you have escaped to your own Tuscan villa for a memorable adventure.

The campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is beautiful for a stroll, but stargazers will enjoy visiting Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. We suggest booking the DATE NIGHT package through Marriott Hotels and enjoy a special evening with a $100 Dining credit to Il Palio plus late checkout.
