Create a Sunny Coastal Corner in your Home
Around January or February, winter starts to feel like it will never end, right? Read on! Here are some ideas to create a sunny, Coastal Corner in your home. Even the smallest coastal touches can transport you to the blue water, white sand, and warm sunshine of summer at the beach. All you need are coastal colors and a few beachy decor items! Take a look at the picture above. Even a very small corner like this can be transformed into a sunny, beachy spot to shake off the winter chill. This little reading nook is warmed up with coastal wall art, a seahorse pillow, a starfish above the door, and seaside colors. Nothing here is terribly expensive (for instance, the little lamp with the turquoise sea coral lampshade was $12 at Target), but the impact is big and the feeling of kicking back with a good book at the beach is definitely accomplished!

Here's a reading corner on a bit larger scale than the one above. The coastal-chic feel is achieved by combining ocean colors, light, airy draperies, throw pillows with a beachy look, and a few accessories (the red and blue coral, the checkered capiz box, and the globes). The matched undersea artwork pair finish the design, tie in with the aqua, blue, and sand color scheme, and are large enough to keep the grouping from feeling too busy.

Now, for those of you who want to go all-out Coastal, here's a living room that does just that. The long wall in this great-room contains an art arrangement with large-scale prints that are coastal and nautical in nature. A porthole mirror and some sea-bird prints balance the design. A large chair with a turquoise and cream sea-coral print fabric creates a conversation grouping with the turquoise sofa. Coastal throw pillows and a tropical floor lamp complete the scene. Don't forget the stairwell! In this home, the stairwell can be a bit dark, so it was painted a light and bright sea-blue with white railings and sand-colored carpet. Adding to the coastal ambiance are five sea-bird prints framed in white and hung in a stair-step design all the way up the stairs.
