When better than the start of a new year to think afresh about our hopes and dreams for ourselves and our community? Here at Transition Keynsham we’re doing some thinking about what Transition means for our town, and how to encourage more people to get involved in local Transition initiatives.
As a starter for ten, here’s a quick reminder of what it's all about.
Founded in Totnes in 2006, the Transition movement is a loose alliance of vibrant grassroots community initiatives all over the world that seek to build community resilience in the face of challenges such as climate change, peak oil and economic crises.
Essentially, Transition groups help people set up, nurture and grow local projects. In Keynsham we’re proud to have helped birth the Wombles, the veg plot in the park, the Caterpillars (free range children!), Keynsham Community Energy, Stitch and Bitch, and bike ride socials/workshops.
These all help us achieve the Transition movement’s core aim of developing a community resilient to environmental and economic shocks.
What community initiatives would you like to see in Keynsham? Could your love of DIY lead to a tool swap-shop? Your interest in interior design turn into an upcycling group? Or how about a re-fashion initiative to breathe new life into old clothes? Take a look at the Transition Network website for more inspiration.
Please do drop me an email at lizbarling@gmx.com to tell me what you’re interested in, and perhaps we could help you kick-start a transition initiative of your own!
