A strong start to 2016...

Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand has got off to a cracker start in 2016 largely because of two successful fundraising events in December and over Christmas. CFNZ raised $21K at it's annual Charity Cricket event thanks to the Crusaders being such good sports. And Wellington Branch is celebrating a particularly successful Christmas Tree Festival with a record total - read more about both events below...

Charity Cricket $$$

Cystic Fibrosis NZ’s 33rd annual Charity Cricket match was one of our most successful yet. We raised $21,000 through sponsorship, a live auction, balloon raffles and on-site donations.
The event saw the Crusaders Present team, led by Israel Dagg (right), taking on rugby stars in the Crusaders Past team, which was captained by Justin Marshall. The Crusaders Present team won the 20/20 match by 20 runs, but CFNZ were the real winners - thanks guys!

What does National Office pay for?

CFNZ sometimes get asked what National office pays for.
There are different levels of financial and practical support at a local level, but National Office covers the cost of a large number of grants for PWCF throughout New Zealand. Here is a list of some of the support available for members:

  • Breath4CF grants – up to $300 per person with CF
  • Hospital allowance – for those more than 100kms away from their home
  • Supermarket vouchers – for home I/Vs and weight programmes (assessed by CFNZ Fieldworker)
  • Petrol vouchers - (conditions apply)
  • Organ transplant grants – up to $3000
  • End of life care and funeral grants
  • Hardship grants – these are assessed by the Fieldworkers
  • Special assistance – costs which may arise in emergency situations

In addition to the grants, National also pays for various other services related to running a national charity including operating costs which include staff and fieldworker salaries, and National conferences and conferences for Branch Chairpersons to keep up to date with new developments. In some cases, CFNZ can obtain grants from funding bodies to cover the costs of various services but not every time.
CFNZ also runs the Mark Ashford Scholarship and the CF Achievers Award programme and produces the national newsletter, CF News, and this Panui (newsletter) once a month. We also provide extra support for branches for some of their fundraising.

Alex McKay approaches the bench

Congratulations to Alexander McKay who was admitted to the Bar after graduating with a LLB and BCom last year. Alex was CFNZ’s Mark Ashford Scholar in 2014. He’s photographed here with his twin sister Lizzie. We shared this photograph on our business Facebook page last month and got a record 99 likes. It's great to see so much support for the CF community in New Zealand.
Farewell from Belinda Burnett
CFNZ Chief Executive Belinda Burnett has thanked the CF community as she departs CFNZ: "Today is my last official day as CEO of CFNZ. I have loved my time here. While It has been the most challenging role of my career to date; it has also been one of the most interesting and gratifying. To work with and alongside people that are inspirational, passionate, resilient and committed to the cause has been an honour. While I am sad to be leaving, I am looking forward to establishing a new business venture with my partner. CFNZ staff and the National Board are all working to ensure my departure has minimal disruption to the members. Recruitment of a new chief executive is well underway and an announcement will be made as soon as possible."

Pari Boy Mobiles back in March
EBOS Healthcare have confirmed that the PARI BOY mobile nebulisers will be back in stock on 1 March. Brand Manager Philippa Williams says there have been issues for Pari internationally related to the battery supply for the PARI BOY®mobile S. "Thankfully this has been resolved and we look forward to being able to offer this truly portable device once more.

Tackling Challenge Wanaka
It's too late to enter for Challenge Wanaka but not too late to become a supporter. It would be great to see people from the CF community
supporting the event on Saturday, 20 February. It's the 10th anniversary for Challenge Wanaka and the third year that CFNZ has been the official charity.
Remember our Admin Manager Julie Clemett is cycling the Lake Wanaka Half and fundraising for Breath4CF - so you can also support CFNZ by making a donation via her fundraising page.

Health Minister at Welly's XTF

Wellington’s Christmas Tree Festival has been an outstanding success both in terms of funds raised and awareness of CF. The Festival fetched a record $30,000 profit for CF Wellington, and hosting it at the Airport meant it was a highly visible fundraising campaign. Wellington Branch were thrilled that Health Minister Jonathan Coleman accepted an invitation to the launch, along with Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and NZ Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew. A huge thanks to Wellington Airport for hosting the Festival and congratulations to Kiwibank for designing the winning Xmas Tree.

Achievers' Awards Bonanza

The CF Achievers Awards AND the Asthma Foundation Respiratory Awards are both open. The CF Achievers Awards are handed out annually and in four categories: Sport, Leadership, the Arts & Education.
The Asthma Foundation Awards are only held every second year and there is a category to nominate people with CF. All nominations will also be eligible for the Cody Forbes Award which was inspired by a Turangi teenager who had CF. Visit the website for more info and entry forms for both Awards.
National Conference - Save the Date!
The theme of this year's National Conference is "CF - Today & Tomorrow". Some great speakers and topics are planned and we also plan to livestream the conference over the internet again this year to reach people with CF who are unable to attend the Conference.
When: Saturday 7, Sunday 8 May
Where: Holiday Inn, Auckland Airport Hotel
