New Epping St John’s School headteacher sets out his aims

The new headteacher of Epping St John’s School has spoken about his vision for the school and his aim to turn all his pupils into “good, global citizens”.

Allan Osborne, five days into his new role, says he has been “absolutely taken aback” at the positivity being displayed about the school in the town and around the school itself.

Having students who are a part of the local community is just one element of school life that Mr Osborne is keen to develop.

He said: “My vision is to create a good local school for the local community. I believe that Epping is a moral, accepting, diverse community that deserves a good local school, and the students and parents deserve a good local school.”

He added: “I want to create students who leave after Year 13 as good, global citizens who take pride in their communities, accept other faiths and religions, cultures and races and are full of pride of themselves and their families.

“I also want them to achieve academic success, to make sure they have opportunities and to create social mobility to ensure that they go into society being able to provide for their families and then their families can provide for their families.”

Mr Osborne, who joins Epping St John’s having previously been Associate Principal of Mark Hall Academy in Harlow, has already introduced new initiatives.

“I want students to understand that there is a world outside of Epping and to go and be excited by that, through businesses and business links, through the arts, sport and theatre.

“Ultimately I want them to be instilled with good manners and real traditional values which I call my ‘None Negotiables’ or Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) so that Epping St John’s students will start talking in those terms.”

He added: So far the culture and positive climate is overwhelming. The response from parents has been amazing and staff have said already that the ethos has shifted dramatically.

“I’ve told the community, staff and parents that I won’t have ‘wallpaper children’.

"The vast majority of students have had no sanctions of any kind, no detentions. Those children need to be celebrated and I won’t have those children left behind. We need to be celebrating their work.

“I’ve been absolutely taken aback by the positivity especially from parents and the community. I went into the town over the Christmas holiday to try and assess what the perception of the school was. It was very positive.”
