Loss of signal issues
some key things to help you solve the problem
Since your Micro-Comm SCADA system primarily is centered around a radio system, it stands to reason that there may occasionally be problems with getting radio signals to where they need to go.
A quick visit to the site can often help you visually find the reason. Here are some common issues:
1. Faulty radio or power supply. A radio that is no longer putting out it's fully programmed power can cause signal issues. Likewise, a weak DC power supply may not be able to put out enough power to allow the radio to transmit properly. Both are fairly easy to change out, try one at a time to see if that is what's causing your LOS issue.
2. Make sure coax is secured and not swaying in the wind. Coax that has broken loose, pulling on the antenna connector will eventually fail. You may re-secure the coax yourself, however, often damage to it may have already occurred. Contact our service department for more information.
3. Antenna pointing the wrong direction. In some cases, strong winds may actually turn the antenna which affects its performance. If you not sure what direction it should be pointing, call Micro-Comm for assistance.
The above three items may be considered the most common reasons- but a little more detective work may be required:
RTU's using our S4500, M1500, M1550, M1600 and M1650 have a green STATUS light near the top center of the unit. This light will be steady green when the unit is functioning normally. However, if the STATUS light is flashing green, it is an indication of a problem that can cause a Loss of Signal.
Next, look at the red and yellow lights next to COM 1. When you hear sound on the radio speaker, you should see the RXD light flash in sequence with the sound you hear. Likewise, when the radio is silent, the RXD light will not be flashing. This is normal when the controller is receiving data from the radio.
Next watch for the TXD to light briefly once every couple of minutes. In conjunction you will see the transmit light on the radio come on as well. This happens when the controller transmits data, and note that the radio will be silent when transmitting.
In short, if you see a flashing status light OR never see an RXD light on COM 1 OR never see a TXD light on COM 1, there is a problem that can cause a loss of signal problem.
Visiting the site also can reveal problems due to vandalism or something unusual, such as an invasion of insects inside the panel which can cause serious electrical shorts and other issues.
After visiting the site, take note of what you have found and give our service department a call at 913-390-4500.
