Official Opening of Paul Stangroom Fine Art Gallery

Welcome! Alison and I are now settled into the gallery and our home. The beautiful and celebrated Ellie, aged 3, Alison's dear granddaughter, will be officially opening the gallery for us on 26th March at 2pm and you are invited to come along. The gallery will be open from noon (45 Front Street, Prudhoe NE42 5DB). I very much hope to see you there..

I have had good news from the Royal Watercolour Society this month. I also have news of several new originals for sale and a new print coming that has a story all of its own to tell.
Gallery Opening, 26th March

Please come along to celebrate the opening of my gallery with me - just mention this February newsletter as you come in. I have postcards of this invitation above also if you prefer - email Margaret at littlebirdmarketing@mail.com if you would prefer a couple of the postcards, which you can then keep or send to friends.

We decided to have Alison's granddaughter Ellie open the gallery as it is a family and friends celebration through and through. I would love to see you there.

The Royal Watercolour Society have chosen my watercolour 'Shooting Lodge' to be exhibited in their 2016 exhibition. The shooting lodge is nestled in the fells, between Stanhope and Blanchland, and my painting will be exhibited in London  from 4-16 March this year, so call in to see it if you're in the capital. Prints are for sale on my website.

Breakwater - Spittal

This seascape features Spittal, near Berwick upon Tweed.

I traveled up to Berwick recently to deliver paintings. We got there early and decided to explore this beautiful area south of the Tweed. On the beach at Spittal, I was struck by the bone-like quality of the decaying breakwater and decided to paint it. I very much enjoy painting rivers and seascapes and plan to paint more in the coming years.

Blind -Sunderland Eye Infirmary

Sunderland Eye Infirmary is almost the only building I have painted twice. I first painted it when I was at art school in Sunderland, when I was 22 or 23. I have always been interested in ruined buildings, this one was all empty and closed up, and I managed to climb over the back wall and get into it. This stained old blind in an old eye infirmary had a kind of a resonance and magic to it, to me.

Since having the gallery, the old eye infirmary has tweaked at me. Perhaps living in a slightly more urban environment has drawn me to repaint it. I'm glad that I did.

Candle Print

This print of a candle etching has a story all of its own to tell.

I was intrigued to receive a message on Facebook from a Facebook friend who lives in California. This friend has come across a print of an etching I made back in the 80s. A homeless guy out in California bought the print in a thrift store there and it's one of his most loved possessions.

The etching was of a candle in a window - I made the original drawing when I lived out in India and then made the etching in Newcastle on returning to England. I loved the story of it ending up in California and would also love to know where it traveled inbetween Newcastle and the States. This inspired me to buy back a print of the same image from my friend the poet Anne Stevenson and the print will soon be available for sale on my website, or just email me to order one (paul@stangroom.orangehome.co.uk).

Forest Edge Interiors

Alison is now running Forest Edge Interiors from the gallery and will be there to welcome you on the official opening day. She has been making bespoke blinds, cushions and curtains for clients in the area for some time and is now displaying them from the gallery. She also makes table/bed runners and throws, with a personal consultation/swatch service and a measuring and fitting service.

Just ring Alison if you have anything you think she can help you with - 07792278139
Lawrence Stangroom

One of the things I am enjoying about beginning to open the gallery is sorting through paintings and artifacts to show there. I'm sharing these drawings by my father, Lawrence in the gallery now. The drawings are of me and my siblings. I was 6 weeks old when he drew the image of me centre right.

I would love to trace more work by my father, particularly his early etching. Please keep a lookout for me and let me know if you come across any of his work.
