Life After the Bell
A group for girls, 12- 15 years of age, that provides an opportunity to get out and be active after the school bell rings.
Each week the girls will embark on a mini-adventure that is active and interactive. The hope is to provide a fun and theme based time designed to give the young ladies a connection with positive role models and the message, “You are not alone”. We are targeting girls, 12-15 years of age, living in Kentville that are perceived to be “at risk”. The two main outcomes for the 10 week program is that girls would have a fun and active time discovering who are the people in their community that they could turn to and ask for help. Consideration will also be given to those who don't have opportunities to get involved in recreational activities due to financial challenges.
Life After The Bell starts on Monday, February 8th. The program will be each Monday from 4 to 5:30 pm. The meeting location will be at the Portal Youth Centre @ 437 Main Street, Kentville. Activities will be carried out both indoors and outdoors using facilities in Kentville.

Kim Vaughan has lived in the Town of Kentville for 18 years. "I love the convenience of being so close to everything but privacy where I live," she says.
Kim works at Acadia University and volunteers in the community which keeps her very busy.
This is her favorite 'quick' recipe that looks great.
Cream Cheese Tarts
Ingredients:
2 boxes of frozen tart shells (small)
8ozs of cream cheese
1/4 cup of sugar
500ml of cool whip
Optional Garnish suggestions: cherries, strawberries, mint, chocolate shavings, etc.
Directions:
Prepare tart shells as suggested on box. In a separate bowl mix with mixer the cream cheese, sugar and cool whip. When mixed, spoon into tart shells. Serve immediately or refrigerate.
Historical Moment
The Nicklet: Theatre in Kentville
Al Clarke's achievements were numerous. In the early 1900s, Clarke, along with Fred Hiltz, pioneered the opening of a silent movie theatre, the Nicklet, on the third floor of the Hiltz block (now the location of the White Family Funeral Home). The reason the theatre was called the Nicklet was that it only cost a nickel to go! Al Clarke was the founder of Kentville's "first motion picture house" but it is also believed that his movie theatre was the first in this region.
The theatre predominantly showed silent films. Clarke and Hiltz added a stage to the original Nicklet and produced theatrical shows including many American-based productions that first played in Halifax before coming to Kentville. For decades, Clarke also produced musical variety shows throughout Kings County using local musicians and singers. These were extremely popular. During WWII, Clarke organized amateur groups and presented shows throughout the entire Valley, raising large amounts for the Red Cross.
Later, around 1910, Clarke moved the theatre to a new building on Main Street, and the Nicklet eventually became the Empire Theatre, the space now occupied by Reid Jewellers.
Then, in 1923, along came Mr. Spencer of New Brunswick who wanted to buy the theatre. Clarke refused to sell it to him. So, apparently, Spencer hired workers and carpenters and pretended to build his own theatre on a vacant lot across the street. Well, this convinced Clarke and Hiltz to sell for fear that they might lose everything to the competitors. After this, the theatre became Empire Theatres.
The Capitol theatre was later built down the road, but burnt in 1948. It was then rebuilt in 1951 where it was then known as the Paramount Theatre – which operated as a movie theatre until the 1990s. It is now home to the Vineyard church and a transition house.
Question: What is the process for clearing the snow off the streets of Kentville?
ANSWER: Kentville has a snow clearing plan that prioritizes main roads and thoroughfares. During heavy snowfalls Town Crews work around the clock to keep roads clear of snow and ice.
Question: How come we sometimes see big piles of snow in "parking spots"?
ANSWER: Something somewhat unique to Kentville is that Town Crews pile snow so that it can be fully removed from downtown. Other communities use a technique called "shelving" where snow banks are left lining streets. This can be problematic for sidewalks as snow melts and refreezes as ice, and leaves a barrier between sidewalks and parking spaces along the streets. Kentville removes all the snow from downtown to keep streets and sidewalks as clean as possible for pedestrians.
Question: Do they wait until the streets are empty to remove it?
ANSWER: Crews typically try to remove snow piles outside of peak traffic hours to limit the disruption in the downtown core.
Question: What is the process?
ANSWER: Snow is cleared from main roads and streets first, residential areas are cleared next. In Downtown, snow is piled until weather has ended, and is then placed in trucks and removed altogether.

School Travel Planning gets a boost with a $2000 grant from the Central Kings Community Health Board
Children know that using active transportation to and from school is part of a healthy lifestyle, it’s good for the environment, and it makes them feel happier.
So why don't more children walk or bike to school?
The reasons are complex. Time, safety, distance, infrastructure, weather, family structure, and lifestyle are just a few.
School Travel Planning uses a comprehensive community-based approach to address the travel-related issues around our school. It involves many important stakeholders from our community: students, parents, teachers, traffic engineers, police, Public Health, recreation, and more.
Our goals are to:
• Increase students’ physical activity and well-being; and
• Create safer streets for young pedestrians and cyclists.
For the 2015-16 school year, the KCA School Travel Planning committee has identified the following priorities for action:
Walk & Wheel Day events: There was amazing uptake with this last June, with nearly half of the school population taking part! There were so many bicycles that the racks were overflowing onto the fences and playground. Many children continued to walk or wheel to school in the days following the event.
Active & Safe Routes to School Map: Based on the Family Survey conducted last June, the map will show recommended Active Travel Routes, as well as alternative car drop-off locations, and meeting places in neighbourhoods where children could gather and then travel as Buddies to the school. Our goal is to complete this project by spring 2016, so that it can be given to new KCA families at Primary Orientation. The completed maps will be distributed to all families mid-September 2016.
Encourage Active Travel part-way with car drop-off spots a distance from the school. Key locations will be identified where parents can drop off their children and have them walk the rest of the way to KCA.
Signage: We will develop a plan for signage at the recommended drop-off locations, as well as along some of the routes in the Active & Safe Routes to School Map.
Increase parents’ awareness of the benefits of Active Travel: We will look for opportunities to share with parents the benefits of children walking and wheeling to school, even part-way. Parents tell us they don’t have enough time in the morning, or that it’s more convenient to drop off their child on the way to work. Managing time to allow for the walk or bike ride to school will become a habit that leads to children arriving more calm, alert, and ready to learn.

At the moment, Bodley is trying to secure the affections of his latest would-be mistress by "selling" her husband an expensive mink fur coat for a fraction of its real worth, and the stammering Crouch is saddled with the task of consummating the sale with a straight face. But, as luck would have it, the husband seizes the bargain coat as the perfect gift for his own mistress—whereupon the complications burgeon uproariously, with poor Crouch caught in the middle.

TOWN OF KENTVILLE: WINTER PARKING REGULATIONS
Effective December 01,2015 and until April 15,2016 Regulations made by the Traffic Authority for the Town of Kentville Pursuant to Section 202(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act R.S.N.S., 1990 Chapter 293
No person shall park upon any highway or street, in the Town of Kentville, between hours of one am (01:00) and seven am (07:00) of the same day:
No owner or driver or person having control or custody of an vehicle shall park the vehicle if it is unattended by a person authorized to move or capable of operating the same, upon any highway or street in the Town of Kentville, in such a manner as to hinder, inconvenience or prevent the proper removal of snow or ice from such highway or street.
No owner or driver or person having control of any vehicle shall, during the period from one hour after any snow storm has commenced to two hours after such snow storm has stopped, park the vehicle if it is unattended by a person authorized to move or capable of operating the same, upon any highway or street in the Town of Kentville.
The provisions of Subsection 2 shall not apply to emergency vehicles.
It shall be an offence for any person to fail to comply with these resolutions and such person will be liable to a penalty provided by Section 292 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
OBSTRUCTION DURING SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS
The Town of Kentville wishes to remind its residents that during the snow removal season, November 1st through March 31st, objects such as hockey nets, basketball nets, soccer nets, etc. must be stored outside of the road right of way at all times. The road right of way width behind your side of the curb is generally 10 feet. The overall road right of way width is a minimum 50 feet.
This precaution is to avoid damage to both personal property and the snow removal fleet of the Town of Kentville. Any damage to fleet vehicles by objects left within the road right of way will be the responsibility of the property owner. Although we will exercise caution as much as possible, the Town of Kentville will not be responsible for any damage to personal property left within the road right of way during snow removal operations.
The Town of Kentville apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe Winter Season.

The Town of Kentville wishes to advise all builders and contractors that the Department of Engineering & Works will not issue street openings permits for sewer or water laterals to be installed between December 01, 2015 and April 15, 2016.

The Chester Avenue upgrade, with an estimated cost of $2.9 million over two years, was recently approved for New Build Canada Fund dollars. The three levels of government will split the bill for the project. Read more.
