Happy New Year to you and your family from everyone at Kipawa Trust International.

Welcome to the first of our regular newsletters to keep you informed about Kipawa's work and fundraising efforts. We would welcome any feedback you have on these newsletters, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with any comments or questions.

New Year's Resolutions?

Thank you for all your support and generosity in 2015. However, there is still a lot to do - according to UNICEF 42% of Kenyans still live below the poverty line. In Ruiru, that means that children are still going without the basics of food and education. We know that many of you will have made New Year's Resolutions to get fitter or take on personal challenges - maybe raising money for a good cause was one of them?! Perhaps you need a little something to aim for to keep you motivated?

How can you help?

In the past supporters have raised sponsorship for Kipawa in a variety of ways – team triathlons, 5k runs, Ride London - or even asking for donations for Kipawa instead of wedding gifts! Small things like a coffee morning in your home or a bake sale at work can raise much needed funds. But if you're looking for a more serious challenge, here are some ideas to get you started – click away!
We will be happy to provide support and assistance for any fundraising ideas you have - big or small. Please get in touch to discuss your ideas.

Christmas Kickstarter Appeal Update

Our Christmas Appeal to raise £2,500 to establish a 'Kickstarter Class' in Mukuyu School was a great success. Thanks to your generous donations, we raised over £3,600 which will allow us to help even more children with the focussed educational and social work support they need to get back in to school. Read more about this vital improvement to Mukuyu School here.

An exciting year ahead for Kipawa in 2016!

We have big plans for 2016! With your support we will be able to help even more children and families in Mukuyu School - and we are hopeful of expanding our support to a second primary school in the area!

An 'easy' way to support Kipawa

One of our supporters explains how easy it can be to support Kipawa: "At the moment, 21 of Kipawa’s supporters are using Easyfundraising – and in the last year, we have collectively raised over £160.

I’m one of them. I signed up in late March 2015. Since then, I have raised an extra £20 for Kipawa – without really noticing. I’ve simply been buying things I would normally be getting anyway.

I travel sometimes with work, and will occasionally use Laterooms.com for hotels or Flybe for flights: whenever I book using those sites now, my internet browser automatically prompts me to get a donation from those purchases. Even at £0.80 a transaction, it all adds up. Obviously, bigger things help too: we bought a new fridge from Curry's before Christmas, and £3 was sent to Kipawa.

It’s straightforward to set up - see how it works here. My approach has been to download the ‘Donation Reminder’ button to my browser; that then automatically suggests that Kipawa benefits from the sale.

It couldn’t be simpler. I’d encourage you all to sign up and raise more money for Kipawa in 2016."

New school year at Mukuyu School

The new school year is getting underway at Mukuyu School and the children, teachers and staff are settling back into school life.

The children are happy to be back at school with their friends and are benefitting from the morning porridge and lunch provided by Kipawa. Counselling and social work support is being provided to the most vulnerable children and their families.

Dave Shepherd

Everyone at Kipawa was deeply saddened by the recent news that Dave Shepherd had passed away following a brief illness in January. ‘Shep’ was a great supporter of Kipawa, hosting numerous quiz nights over the last five years. These events raised thousands of pounds over the years and were always great fun, which was all down to Shep. He was kind, funny and friendly - definitely one of life’s good guys - and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
