Celery Fields
The Oxnard area has been experiencing heavy rains, strong winds, and now lightening. Because of the force and impact of the current weather conditions, safety protocols have been implemented to protect our harvesters and all have been sent home for today. What this means for today's harvest is that we have fallen short and prorates will occur. With the heavy rains projected to continue through tonight in Oxnard, we are expecting  very wet and muddy conditions tomorrow, which will definitely slow our crews and decrease available supplies. As Friday looks to be clear, volumes will be somewhat better, but overall availability will remain very limited. Rain is expected to return on Saturday. In addition to the recent/current rains; the past cold temperatures in Oxnard has caused sizing issues which are expected for the next coming weeks. These sizing issues have become so apparent that we have been forced to make the decision not to harvest this Saturday to allow our crops to gain some size. As Jong as the day and night temperatures remain cool/cold, sizing will be another challenge that we will contend with.  Unfortunately, because of all of the mentioned issues;  please expect continued prorates and/or orders being handed back through the remainder of this week and weekend and maybe during the next coming weeks.

This week we will be hit with several challenges in the herb categories conventional/Organic and other leafy vegetables, weather conditions will have a drastic affect on yields and quality of the product.

Asparagus is still a major problem with availability. Supplies from Peru and Mexico are non existent. Peru is just about finished and Mexico is dealing with cold temperatures in the Baja and Caborca growing regions. The market is extremely active and this type of situation will last possibly through the month of January.
Supplies are the main reason this commodity is at above normal pricing. Salinas is still harvesting product but the extreme cold weather up here is causing serious problems with sizing. And now add serious rainfall will continue to limit supplies. Also the cold weather in Mexico is holding back supplies of new crop. Sizing will still be limited to small to medium. Look for this to continue for the next three weeks.
Broccoli is still having supply issues in all growing regions. There seems to be better supplies of bunched broccoli versus broccoli crowns. Shipper are having an easier time packing bunched based on the much smaller crown size. This trend seems to be in Santa Maria, Salinas, Mexico, and Yuma. Processors are still struggling to cover orders and continue to purchase broccoli crown acreage keeping the carton market active.
Freezing temperatures of the past several weeks in the desert growing regions is taking it’s toll. Quality is suffering with all leafy greens showing epidermal peel both on the outer ribs and down into the heart. Additionally, we have had a recent rain event that will only exacerbate the quality issues. Romaine, red and green leaf will all show some discoloration and ‘breakdown’ where the blisters on the epidermis occur. Yields are suffering as a result. With this drop in production we are seeing a much stronger market and expect it to continue to strengthen through the month of January.
