 Nora, what is your 5CollDH project about?
My project, Locating Zines, explores networks of zines (small, self-produced booklets or mini magazines) in the 1990s through digital mapping. The rise of zines in the 1990’s is often associated with the rise of riot grrrl, a musical and social movement rooted in third wave feminism that sought to elevate the voices of women and girls in indie and punk scenes. I plan to use digital geospatial and network mapping to investigate and document the physical and social travel of zines throughout the United States, focusing particularly on zines written by people underrepresented in or erased from common narratives of riot grrrl and girl zine history...

Upcoming Speaker: Ben Chang (AC '98)

 This spring, we're excited to welcome Ben Chang (AC'98), Associate Professor of the Arts and Director of the Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences program at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, for a talk at Amherst College on February 25th, 2016. Prof. Chang is an electronic artist whose work explores the intersections of virtual environments and experimental gaming with contemporary media art. Using materials ranging from immersive visualization systems to modified surveillance cameras, hacked video games, and antique telegraphs, his work brings out the chaotic, human qualities in technological systems.

5CollDH is working on an important project to learn more about the kinds of digital humanities and media-based courses that faculty and staff teach in our communities.
We are looking for faculty and staff teaching humanities courses with digital, video game, or new media components, or that ask students to engage software or robotics-based approaches to humanistic inquiry. While we are generally looking for approaches beyond blogging as a tool for writing or class conversation, we are however interested in courses that take one of the above approaches, or social media or online publishing, as an object of inquiry or critique. Please feel free to include courses that introduce students to technological approaches across the curriculum (e.g., GIS, CartoDB, or data visualization tools). We're interested in all kinds of courses, so don't worry about "fitting in": all are welcome.
