But let's get to the point. I'd offer you learn as much from your blunders as your successes. A lot of thought leaders won't share mistakes under the guise of blustry confidence, but you deserve more than that! So here I go. I'll preface that if I had made a different decision at time period zero, I wouldn't be talking to you today. I'd own a summer island in Alaska and a winter island in the Mediterrian. True that.
In the spring of 1990, I was a college instructor at Central Washington teaching information technology, operations research and business management (little did I know years later these disciplines would converge to be Big Data). As a faculty member, you meet interesting people along the way and across the community. So I was connected via a student with the founders of a start-up called Wizards of the Coast. I met with Peter Adkins and his wife at a lower Queen Anne coffee shop (near the Seattle Space Needle) called Uptown Espresso (http://www.velvetfoam.com/). I've just returned from my local computer reseller, Bainbridge Technology, and I'm experiencing PTSD.
When I walked in and started to talk, Brandon the owner, said "Harry Brelsford did you run Windows Update?" Apparently I was his third customer today that walked in with a laptop that had AUTOMATICALLY applied the Windows Update (8.x, 10; circa December 8, 2015) and experienced a midpoint reboot failure and a "Black Screen of Death."
That's where the PTSD kicks in. This brought back many memories from my time in the trenches of service pack gotchas and Patch Tuesday failures. I trembled but was strong and did not cry.
The end of the story is that Brandon and team are doing a data recovery to get my C:> data (e.g. My Documents) recovered to a USB drive. My intentions are to do a refresher and install Windows 10 over the weekend on this laptop, which is a Lenovo 2:1 Helix.
But here is the rest of the story. I soon discovered this is a worldwide problem but with a slightly different narrative. Russ Grover, long-time Small Business Server expert (SBSer) in the Portland, Oregon area has been posting up a closely-related problem concerning the December 8th automatic update concerning Microsoft Outlook starting in Safe Mode. ):
