A decisive year needs strong Humber approach

As we begin 2016 there is an air of optimism from businesses in the Humber and wider region.

Last year saw a year of delivery across key projects and programmes and we want to thank our partners for their work across a varied portfolio, and to the business members who give their time and expertise on our boards, groups and forums.

This excellent partnership work in the Humber has seen millions of pounds of devolved funding that has leveraged millions more in public and private investment to begin projects, which are driving the growth of the Humber economy.
 
This year will be a decisive one with three large issues that could change the way we do things. More>
 

Call for Growth Deal projects

As part of our preparations for any future rounds of Growth Deals, and other funding opportunities, we are developing a “pipeline” of potential projects which could be put forward at the appropriate time for funding.

The pipeline gives a medium term view of projects being developed that support the LEP’s objectives, and an initial indication of their likely cost and timing. It helps our Board and sub-boards to understand partners’ aspirations, identify any gaps in meeting our strategy and give a focus for development work. When funding opportunities arise, it will support the LEP to respond quickly and make the best possible case for investment in the Humber.

The first expressions of interest are due in by January 15 and are for the two following types of developments innovative facilities, managed workspace and incubation space or infrastructure, place and flood risk alleviation.

Innovation event

We’re hosting an event to bring entrepreneurs and big business together to explore ways of working together on January 19.
Representatives of entrepreneurial and innovative start ups and corporates who would like to learn more about working with entrepreneurs are invited to attend.

The workshop offers the opportunity to hear about ways of working with large organisations and investors and offers insights into what large organisations and investors want from their relationships with entrepreneurs. More>

Apprenticeship support success

We’d like to thank our team who ran the successful Humber Apprenticeship Support Service (HASS) pilot.
 
The HASS team HASS Manager, Gill Stevenson, East Riding and Hull broker, Dave Sullivan and broker for North and North East Lincs, Jenny Vincent supported employers, training providers and candidates with impartial support and guidance to help navigate the support and services locally and nationally to help take on apprentices and make sure they are of value to their company.

The team supported the creation of 157 apprenticeships exceeding their target of 130 and engaged with 370 SMEs – a great outcome.

EZ extension
We had good news in the spending review when our bid to more than double our Enterprise Zone was accepted.
The successful bid included employment land put forward by all four Local Authorities in a collaboration that will see the Humber Enterprise Zone (EZ) , already the UK’s largest EZ, more than double in size with an additional 14 sites covering 750ha. These will add to the existing 16 sites that cover 484ha across the Humber.
The extension comes with the usual benefits of an EZ - business rate discount or enhanced capital allowances  - as well as the ability to retain 100 per cent of the business rate growth for 25 years, which is able to be used to fund development required on the EZ sites. More>

Growth Hub update
Our Business Growth Hub was set up in April 2014 to support businesses to access the information and support they need to grow. To date 360.5 jobs have been created plus a further 111 indirect jobs as a consequence of Growth Hub activity. A further 222 jobs have been safeguarded. The project remains on target to achieve its jobs target of 561.  For information and support visit the Growth Hub website. 

50+ conference
Thanks to those who attended our 50+ conference and gave their ideas in November. We are continuing our work on this locally and nationally and will shortly be sending out a survey on the conference and how we take our actions forward to address the skills gap linked to older workers in the Humber and the UK. More>
