our word of the year and what community based care means

Empower

We spent the better part of 2015 working to transition the organization in Kenya from a society to a CBO (Community Based Organization). Everyone says this is working backwards because societies have higher status than CBOs. However, our vision for caring for orphans in coastal Kenya includes community involvement, which is what a CBO is all about.

MKK Update

We start the year with 11 MKKs in primary school, 3 awaiting admission to high school, 8 in high school, 1 in university, 3 enrolled to start college, and 1 awaiting admission to college. 3 potential MKKs under assessment round out our roster to 30 MKKs.

We are posting sponsorship needs on Facebook as we determine the needs. (Note: If you are not on Facebook, you can still check our page.) If you have signed up to sponsor an MKK, expect contact from the MK board in TX, verifying whether you will continue sponsorship or not. Please respond to these emails! We need to know for sure who is covered and who isn't.

Empower

The word of the year for MK Kenya is empower. We are focusing on praying for and instilling a sense of empowerment in the MKKs. If they are to walk in the good works God prepared for them, they need to believe that they are his workmanship (Eph 2:10). We pray that God fills them with mighty inner strength from his glorious, unlimited resources (Eph 3:14-19).

Future Planning

Our future plans (as discussed in this blog post, which was also sent as a letter) require more from God than providing finances (though we still depend on him for that). Our scope still involves sponsorship, but extends far beyond. For a CBO and community based care for orphans to work, people in the community here must get involved. Orphans need relatives who will provide for them. They need families who aren't related to them to take them in when their relatives don't. They need adult education and apprenticeships to make up for missing the chance to go to school as children. They need a community and a church who say, "These are our kids. What do they need from us?"

Pray...
  • Ephesians 2:10 and 3:14-19 over the MKKs. Flip through the photo album as you pray for them by name.
  • that God raises up his people in this region to join the work.
  • that those currently caring for MKKs will see the importance of what they're doing, that they will be encouraged and refreshed.
We thank God for...
  • introducing us to Kenyans who have a heart to follow Jesus and have already stepped out in faith and obedience in taking care of orphans.
  • sustaining us in all ways and using us in the work he is doing.
