“The most influential of all educational factors is the conversation in a child’s home.” ~William Temple

We have been observing in classrooms and watching students engaging in many meaningful lessons and activities.  Teaching is a complex craft that involves so many skills.  The Driscoll teachers are very reflective teachers and are continually working on their instructional strategies and adding to their teaching repertoire.  Many of the teachers are taking the Sheltered English Instruction course to learn how best to instruct our English Language Learners access the curriculum.

This week a special thank you to our ELL teachers, Jody Curran and Nataliia Kuzyak for sharing their best practices and their extraordinary work administering the state testing for our English Language Learners, and to David Youkilis for organizing the materials and Bob Thomas for his technology skills. For grades 1-8, students take two group sessions in Reading/Listening and Writing and one individual session in Speaking.  In Kindergarten, the entire test must be administered individually. Results of the testing will be available in May.

This month, we welcomed back from maternity leave, Maurene Doherty, CLC teacher, Deena Messiqua, LAHB teacher, Jennifer Doubilet, Literacy Specialist and Jennifer Laib, Math Specialist.   We welcome a new para, Patrick Sullivan to first grade who is a recent graduate of Boston College.   We have a new Northeastern Co-op student working in the office.  Jordan O’Dea is getting to know the teachers and students.  She helps in the office, provides classroom assistance, supervises breakfast each morning and helps with lunch duty.  Jordan is a Varsity athlete who runs cross country and in-door track for Northeastern University.

We look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events:

  • January 26, 2016 - 6:30 LBGTQ Gay-Straight Alliance- Driscoll Theater
  • January 29, 2016 – 8:15 Grades 3-5 Community Meeting

Regards,

David and Eileen
