Winter/ Spring News from Art at the Heart of the RUH

We started off the New Year with the great news that The Theatre Royal Bath Creative Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund are supporting two projects to commemorate 100 years since the first soldiers arrived at Bath’s 1st World War Hospital. The culmination of these projects will result in a large scale exhibition on the War Hospital as well as other factors that aided the war effort such as the use of animals from the more obvious including horses, to glow worms! Participants on the Children’s ward and Combe Ward; an Older Patient Ward, will contribute to an 8 meter long 3D tapestry celebrating Bath’s community war effort. There will be a commemoration tea and plaque to unveil to mark the centenary on April 26th and a bugler will play the Last Post.

More information on this and other upcoming AATH projects is now available via our brand new website www.artatruh.org which we launched earlier this month.

We are leading up to the final stages of our 2 year pARTicipate programme and there is lots going on behind the scenes including the making of a film and a final evaluation report with 5x5x5=creativity. The project has received plenty of support and recognition and we are very proud that the whole programme has been shortlisted for the Bath Life Awards: Arts category; we’ll let you know how we get along!

Exhibition Programme

Winter / Spring (22nd January – 14th April 2016)
We have three stunning exhibitions on show, guaranteed to delight all of the senses this winter/ spring. Starting off, we are delighted to welcome for the first time to the RUH FRAGILE: Wildscreen who are an award-winning Bristol-based wildlife conservation charity that share awe-inspiring images of all life on Earch to motivate people to care about its conservation.
Joining Wildscreen are a collection of thirty Informal Portraits by photographer Alastair Chalmers. Every picture has a story to tell, reflecting the infinite variety of people and their lives, which is an endless source of interest and fascination.

And last but by no means least, we welcome back for the fourth time the Royal Photographic Society Members Exhibition. The popular biennial print exhibition showcases the diversity of photographic interests that exists within the society from RPS members all around the word, as well as the UK.

'Acts of Kindness'


THE BATH WAR HOSPITAL: 100 YEARS OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AT THE RUH
 
We are delighted to announce that we have secured Heritage Lottery Funding from the ‘1st World War, Then and Now’ fund to commemorate the history and heritage of this vital War Hospital that will leave a legacy for many years to come.

The Royal United Hospital now occupies the former site of the Bath War Hospital and delivers acute health care to a catchment population of 500,000 people across Bath & North East Somerset, North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire.

Call for Memorabilia

We are currently accepting any submissions relating to the Bath War Hospital, to feature within our Central Corridor exhibition 'Acts of Kindness',
date to be confirmed.

Sample items include: Reproductions of letters, photographs of soldiers, illustrations, poems, and artefacts sourced from local archives.

Art at the Heart Scoop Theatre Royal Bath Creative Fund for History and Heritage Project

In support of the main grant from Heritage Lottery Funding, the Theatre Royal Bath Creative Fund has awarded AATH funding for Artist in Residence Edwina Bridgeman to deliver a unique intergenerational project through weekly creative workshops on both the Children and Adolescent’s Ward.

Patients will have the opportunity to explore the history of the War Hospital and the many stories recounting community support. During the workshop Edwina will create a 3D tapestry with patients and it will be displayed alongside the main WW1 Hospital exhibition and remain at the RUH as a permanent legacy.
 
AATH will be working closely with Weston Heritage & Research Society (WHRS) who will be commemorating the Centenary of the opening of the hospital on April 24th and we will be working closely together and sharing resources.

'Conversation and Companionship'

A short film about our participatory programme is now well under way. Working with film maker Andy Kemp and 3rd Year Bath Spa University student Georgina Epps, the film touches upon the environment, being creative, social skills and self-esteem.

A special preview event will be held in April to mark the end of a two year funding grant from Arts Council England.

Capital Projects

Art within the built environment

Pharmacy Colour Workshops

Work is well under way in the old P3 Car Park and a new two storey Pharmacy Building is under construction. AATH will be running workshops with staff in February to gage their impressions for suggested colour schemes to include feature walls, flooring and impact panelling. This is a very sterile area but we want to try and soften the internal working areas with sensitive and imaginative additions of colour and also art.

We are teaming up with Dr Michele Whiting: artists and researcher, and also Sarah Bailey: Head of Bath University’s Pharmacy Department. They will be researching how plants and marine life have been and are still being used in leading ground breaking treatments for conditions such as cancer and depression. These will be transferred to wall areas as vinyl’s. We looked at Damien Hirst’s ‘Pharmacy’ series and we hope to incorporate a cabinet with artefacts and perhaps a spot or two.
PET/CT Scanner refurbishment

The PET/CT Scanner refurbishment is another area that is hidden away from general public and is in fact going through a complete re-furb to include a brand new scanner. Patients have to wait for a long time to go through the scanning process and rest period and so it’s vital that the environment is welcoming and uplifting.

Katy McIntyre Brown is designing a series of images across the department which will be transferred to vinyl wallpaper. There will also be a 6 panelled sky ceiling in the scanner room which will add another dimension and distraction to the room.

Bath Life Arts Award Finalists - again!

We are thrilled to let you all know we have been selected as a Finalist in the Bath Life Awards: Art category sponsored by Fidelius.

Since winning the Bath Life Arts Award in 2014 we haven’t looked back, despite the vulnerable climate we find ourselves in.

The Bath Life Award winners will be announced on 25th February at the Bath Assembly Rooms.
