Block 5, January/February 2016

The Tutt Library Renovation Project is entering Phase Four, the construction documents phase, which will run until construction begins after Commencement 2016. Read more about the progress to-date, see more images, and submit your questions or comments. To minimize impact on students and other library patrons, we are also developing a transition plan with the help of the CC community.

From the Office of Parent and Family Relations

I can hardly believe it's almost February! The end of December, Half Block, and the beginning of Block 5 have whizzed by in a flurry of activity!

Dynamic Half Block 2016 was our busiest ever, with over 25 percent of our current students taking advantage of the opportunity to further develop habits of intellect and imagination, build their résumés, and complement their transcripts through their participation in either for-credit courses or non-credit offerings. Professor Jim Parco's personal financial planning class, pictured at right, is always well-attended!

We marked the First Monday of Block 5 with a variety of events that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday. I encourage you to read this short article about the day's events, including the traditional All Peoples' Breakfast, a First Mondays talk by Jamie Washington, and a campus community dialogue. You can also see pictures from the breakfast in the President's Blog.

As always, please feel welcome to be in touch with me regarding your questions or concerns. Happy New Year!

COMMENCEMENT 2016

"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."Howard Thurman
Colorado College Class of 2016 Motto

Commencement exercises for the Class of 2016 will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Make plans now to join us for a full weekend of activities, which include the Commencement Dance on Saturday, May 14, at 8 p.m. and Baccalaureate on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. The schedule, including lodging information, will be updated here as information becomes available. Formal invitations for students who are expected to graduate will be mailed in early March.

In the Spotlight: Summer Session

How will your student spend the summer?
Colorado College is offering over 60 dynamic courses, both on campus and abroad. Your student can learn Spanish in Spain, participate in a unique internship in India, or study history and literature in Israel. They can learn about art history in Paris, examine rainforest ecosystems in Ecuador, or investigate the political psychology of oppression and reconstruction in Central Europe.
On-campus, your student can take a course on studio recording in conjunction with the Summer Music Festival, immerse themselves in a Buntport Theatre Company production from inception to performance, or study the science and emotion of climate change and get GIS certification in Climate Odyssey. They have the opportunity to equip themselves with skills to carry ideas from creation to innovative action through the HBX CORe: The language of business as well as learn to leverage their education to solve practical problems through Design Thinking, both offered in partnership with Innovation@CC. Take advantage of this politically dynamic time to study the processes and perils of globalization in International Relations, learn about different political systems in Comparative Politics, question if there is a fundamental justification for democratic rule in Liberty and Equality, investigate how the death penalty, environmental, same-sex marriage, and welfare policies are made in Public Policy Making, and reflect on if there are universal “truths” about leadership in Leadership: Theory and Practice.
Talk to your student today about their summer plans!

Helping Your Student Contact Mental Health Resources

If you are concerned that your student is struggling, your goal should not be to solve their problems for them, but to confront the issues as directly and constructively as possible in order to help them seek help before problems become debilitating. Read more here about specific steps you can take.
Contact the Wellness Resource Center or the CC Counseling Center for more information about mental health resources on campus.

Supporting Our Scholars
Begin All Anew: Prioritization and Time Management on the Block

by Katrina Bell, The Colket Center

As students return from the winter break and immerse themselves in CC culture, the reality of their days sets in. They get up to face the chill of a Colorado morning, rushing to Rastall to try to grab a bite before their 9 a.m. course, where they will be challenged to comprehend abstract theories or shift their world views, before being assigned up to 150 pages of readings. They may have to return to the classroom by 1 p.m. to take an adjunct, participate in a lab, or view a film. After that, all the other activities, meetings, and opportunities for engagement on campus creep in, leaving little time to eat or sleep, much less exercise or practice other self-care. For these over-booked but highly motivated students, effective time management and an ability to prioritize can be the difference between a busy but manageable schedule, and one that is overwhelming.
Read more here about ways you can advise your student to practice effective time management, particularly if you notice that your student is struggling to stay afloat.

Career Center News

The Career Center is busy working with students to land great summer internships or connect with the right post-graduate opportunity.
The Career Center will once again be offering summer internship funding awards. All students who will return to campus for a minimum of one semester in the Fall of 2016 are eligible to apply. Applications open on February 1. Connect your student with more information here.
Opportunities for students to connect with potential employers will be available through the Selective Liberal Arts Consortium (SLAC) Video Interview Day and the Outdoor Career SymposiumVisit the Career Center website for information on these and other great opportunities!
On May 12 and 13, the Career Center will offer an exciting new program for current juniors who are preparing for the last year of their CC experience: Rising Senior Symposium – The Road to Adulting. Students will spend two days with peers and alumni developing a strategy to make the most of the upcoming summer and their senior year. In conference-style sessions, students will learn how to stand out to potential employers, develop a network, and hear from alumni about what they would do again, and what they would have done differently as seniors. This symposium includes a housing extension until Saturday May 14, at noon. More information will be shared with students in the next couple weeks, but please let your student know now about this great way to kick off the final year of their CC journey!

THIS & THAT

Apple Repair Services
ITS: is happy to announce that we now provide CC students with Apple repair services! Instead of going to an Apple store, students can bring their device or computer to ITS: to be fixed here on campus. This is true both for warranty and non-warranty repairs. Students can bring their Apple device to the ITS: Help Desk in the basement of Tutt Library for evaluation. Email, call (719) 389-6449, or drop by the ITS: Help Desk for more details!

Our New Look!
What sets CC apart? The Block Plan. Our sense of place. Our people. All three, equally important, are now the cornerstones of CC’s first comprehensive Master Communications Plan. The plan provides an integrated, intentional guide that not only pulls together much of what we already know about CC, but allows us to move into 2016 with a powerful, unified look and voice with which to share the vibrant stories that make up our CC community. Watch a video presentation about the development of the plan and check out our distinctive new logo at the bottom of this newsletter!

Although there is no substitute for experiencing an event in person, it is not always possible for parents and family members to come to campus. Many events are available via live stream or on demand. See the calendar of upcoming events and plan to join us...virtually!
