MLP in Action
Annie, a nineteen year old MLP Client, was denied Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) services because of her complicated presentation of dual diagnosed schizophrenia and autism. MLP worked closely with Annie's psychiatrist to provide the necessary documentation that the client's limitations were sufficiently correlated to her autism, rather than her mental illness. On the morning of the hearing, DDA decided to make the client eligible. This was not just a win for the individual client, but also an example of systemic advocacy in that it changed the rules so that dual diagnosis no longer excludes autistic individuals with mental illness from being eligible for DDA services.
