Program Season of Service Update....and Call for Adobe Photoshop Skills!
Last Tuesday, the clouds parted for the Black StudentUnion’s annual Martin Luther King Student March from San Leandro High School to City Hall. BSU students were joined by several other clubs and supportive adults. The BSU has several other activities planned for Season of Service including a “teach in” for Black History Month in February. Thank you to Whitney Walker and the “Showing Up For Racial Justice” organization for helping SLED obtain signs for the students.
Also last week, SLED arranged to have an expert in the field of gender sensitive and inclusive environments for children and teens come to speak to Club Rainbow. This year Club Rainbow, with their advisor, Kate Livson, is exploring how to advocate for bathroom spaces that offer a safe and comfortable environment for all students.
With a grant from the Kaiser Community Benefit Program, SLED is working to connect community resources to student Season of Service Projects. We currently have a need for 3 or more adults with Adobe Photoshop skills to work with Bancroft Middle School teacher Lee Rosenberg in helping students combine text with images for their SOS posters. If you are available to volunteer on a Tuesday February 22nd or 28th from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. please email wecare@sledfund.org Thank you!
Eat Out For Education Program Ends
The “Eat Out for Education” program was initiated in 2009 as a way for all families to support the San Leandro Education Foundation, while at the same time supporting local businesses. Our goal was to to increase resources for our schools while bringing together the community and stimulating the San Leandro economy.
Unfortunately, we are ending the Eat Out for Education program. While the Eat Out coupon continues to be our most “clicked-on” portion of our weekly newsletter, we have not seen much in terms of contributions over the past 9 months. Perhaps the program is too cumbersome to track for businesses, or perhaps people just aren’t utilizing the program.
If we find an alternative technology that makes it easier both for business owners and customers to track their Eat Out participation, we hope to restart the program. Until then, we thank the community for eating out to support the students and for the businesses who participated in the program.
