Sometimes it might seem like we are the only person that has the opportunity to tell someone about the good news of Jesus Christ's salvation. From what we know of that person's life circumstances it seems unlikely that anyone else could be presenting gospel truth to them. This certainly could be the case, and we have sufficient scriptural motivation to share the gospel with anyone in the whole world. We know, however, that God is working in ways that are not always apparent to us. This has been evident as we have gotten to know our Florida neighbors over the past few months.
We routinely have opportunities to interact with them and talk about gospel truth. Most of them have had some interaction with true Christianity and local churches at some point in the past, but some of them have distanced themselves from the church and / or gospel truth for one reason or another. Knowing this, it seems like there would be little to no opportunity for them to have regular interaction with Christians and the truth.
We were invited to a community-wide Christmas party in December. There was some great food and great opportunities to get to know our neighbors better. One of our neighbors speaks Spanish, so that has always been a natural segue to gospel conversations as Kelly and I talk about our reason for learning Spanish - to share the gospel with Spanish speakers. The rest of the group didn't speak much Spanish, so we were speaking in English as well. As I talked about Peru, the neighbor's adult son, whom I had never met, began to ask some specific questions about the work we are preparing to do and what church we were a part of. Here is where the grace of God shines brightly! As we talked more it became evident that he is a genuine Christian. A couple years ago God graciously pulled him out of some dangerous, sinful choices and gave him new life in Christ. This young man is now a consistent means by which God presents gospel truth to his family. As we share the gospel we can be confident that God is doing a greater work than we can imagine.
"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 (HCSB)
