  January 2016 PTSA Newsletter
Dear Issaquah High PTSA members,

Martin Luther King, whose birthday we commemorated earlier this week, embodied civic engagement and the positive change that can result. Two upcoming PTSA-sponsored events provide parents and students the opportunity to engage their elected officials and serve their community.  Both events can serve as catalysts for change.

Focus Day will take place on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.  On this day, PTSA members from around the state will convene in Olympia and meet with their State legislators to advocate for fully funded basic education in our state.  As the largest volunteer organization in the State of Washington, the WSPTA has a powerful voice and Focus Day provides a unique opportunity for members to affirm the importance of funding reform.  For additional information, contact Randi Wright, our Advocacy Chair at: randallyn@hotmail.com.

The second annual IHS Volunteer Fair will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, during both lunches in the Commons.  Representatives from local volunteer organizations will be on hand to inform students about volunteer opportunities and how they can strengthen community by sharing their time and talent.   All logged volunteer hours count toward the PTSA Community Service Honor Cord worn by seniors at graduation.  Please encourage your student to attend and to start volunteering today.  For more information, contact Emily Palmgren, Chair of the Community Service Program at:   issyhighcommunityservice@gmail.com

Earlier this month, all of you received the 2015-2016 PTSA Student Directory and Parent Handbook.  We hope that you are able to make good use of this fabulous resource!  Good luck to your students with their final exams and, as always, thank you for your ongoing support.  We look forward to seeing you at our next General Membership meeting on Friday, February 12, 2016.

Sincerely,

Your IHS PTSA co-Presidents:

It's that time of the year to begin considering individuals who have exemplified the spirit of volunteerism. Due February 12th are your nominations for Outstanding Advocate and Golden Acorn. Next, due on April 8th, are your nominations for Outstanding Educator. Please start giving this some thought -- it is a wonderful thing to recognize those who bolster our community and lighten the burdens of others though their good works.

The Issaquah School District is considering a new Proposed Bell Schedule. The district is seeking public feedback here.

Superintendent Ron Thiele directed his senior staff in September and October to study the issue, keeping in mind the following parameters:
* School start and end times for all grade levels must occur between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
* The tiered bus system must be kept intact.
* The change to the high school start time must be significant.
* The costs associated with changing to later start and end times must be fiscally responsible.
